Guest guest
I was told by several nurses & doctors that they will give you meds or use a sonic (or similar) device to break up one large stone--if you want to go the allopathic route. Apparently these treatments were developed for one or two large stones and not many small stones. Let me explain why I said that. During the summer of 2006 I was away visiting my in-laws when I had a dreadful gallbladder attack and ended up in the hospital for 6 days on morphine. (Small local hospital doesn't do surgery.) When I had to leave to travel home, they gave me a last shot of morphine and a prescription for Tylenol 3's and privately told me that if this wasn't sufficient pain relief I could suppliment with Ibuprofen (Advil). What I discovered over the course of the two-day car trip home was that the Tylenol 3's didn't help much at all, but the Ibuprofen worked VERY well! I guess because it's an anti-inflammatory. They had already told me that my pain was from an inflamed gallbladder and had me on antibiotics. They also told me that my gallbladder was full of stones and sludge and I should get it removed when I got home. My husband heard one doctor mention " golf-ball sized " . Well, I didn't/don't want to get my gallbladder removed, and in the last year it's given me very little trouble. The stones are still there, because I had another ultrasound and they tell me that one of the stones is 4.1 centimeters across - that's about 1.6 inches!! That must be the one the doctor in the hospital mentioned. Obviously, I can't pass a stone that big. But I've had pain only a few times, and each time it's been completely - and quickly - relieved with Ibuprofen and lying on my side for awhile. I wish the medical profession would consider finding ways to break up the stones instead of removing the gallbladder. Sorry for the long post.
