Guest guest
Hi guys De-lurking to ask a question, Has anyone been told that a goitre is down to your build?!? I saw a specialist on monday after one doctor I saw thought I had a goitre. The specialist was a bit of a nightmare, wasnt intreasted in discussing my symtoms as two previous blood tests have come back in the normal range, he then said that it wasnt a goitre but it was just my build!! I also showed him the symptom checklist (from this website) which I am displaying a lot of. He dismissed this and said they could be down to anything (and that the choking in my sleep I constantly get isnt anything to do with a goitre). He is said that he will send me for a scan and a different blood test which just has 'other tissue A/B's on it?. He refused to do another thyroid blood test as it was a waste of my time?! Luckily my doctor has said that if I didnt get any luck from this specialist, that she would refer me to one who specialises in thyroids. I'm just curious to see if anyone else has been told its down to build? I and others can clearly see the shape of the thyroid and has definatley got bigger over the last couple of weeks - it was first noticed in beg of july. Thanks Niamh xx
Guest guest
Hi suzanne, Normal- it is not good enough to be in range you can feel very different at one end of the range than the other. Bearing in mind that there is a 27 fold difference between 0.5 to 5.5 TSH as it is a logarhythmic scale! Ask doc ofr the tests done and the ranges- they are yours and he cannot refuse, post them here for our comments. Have a look in the files for the symptoms list and see how many more you have. Then write your doc a letter and insist on a second opinoin- you should not have to suffer indefinitely and a fresh set of thyroid function tests TSH free T4 and free T3- I bet you won't get the last one done, but it is worth asking as it is a very good indicator of how well you are doing. Include in your letter the all your symptoms and basal morning temperatures- these will probably be low. Ask also for ferritin zinc selenium and vit D3 to be tested as all are used in the metabloisation of thyroid hormones. Writing makes the doc take more notice- also cc to Head of Practice and ask for the letter to be kept with your notes. > thyroid treatment > From: sgtallent@...> Date: Sat, 17 Apr 2010 11:09:08 +0000> Subject: Goitre> > Hi .. I disagree but I went along with it, anyway it hasn't worked for me, he also took tests, don't know which ones and told me my the tests came back normal, then why do I have low mood, hair loss, constipation, dry skin, abnormal weight gain, the weight gain is really giving me a low mood, I exercise 750 cals off daily and eat 2100 cals but the weight is going on at a rate of 1lb to 2lbs a week, any help would be appreciated .. Guest guest
Suzanne - write to your doctor and ask for all your test results. You need the number for each test done and the reference range for each of the tests. Post them here so we can tell you whether they are normal or not. Trouble is that it is the laboratory that usually writes 'normal' against your results to indicate that it is SOMEWHERE within the normal reference range. Believe me, it matters greatly whether the result is at the bottom, the middle or the top of the reference range. NEVER allow your doctor to tell you that your results are 'normal'. It is a fact that if a doctor cannot give you a proper diagnosis, they will tell you that its all in your head - and offer you antidepressants as the first course of action. Don't let this happen. If you are not satisfied with this specialist, then ask to be referred to another one who cares more about his patients. You do not have to stay with him. Has he agreed to remove your thyroid, or changed his mind now: Luv - Sheila Hi ..
