Guest guest
Has anyone ever heard of or had gall bladder problems as a result of IV therapy? My daughter (age 21) is starting this week and our doc is concerned about this due to her low weight (just under 100 lbs). Is there anything we can do to support her system holistically during treatment? Thanks, Dona
Guest guest
Martha, One of the things my doctor told me was that many have their gall bladder removed unnecessarily. Once the IV is stopped the crystalization resolves. My daughter's order is for 4 weeks of IV ceftin, that may be one of the reasons. I've read that milk thistle, which is a liver detox, works well for the gall bladder as well, I was wondering if anyone has had any other experiences. Guest guest
I also had gall bladder problems in my third or fouth week on rocephin and had the ultrasound which showed lots of sludge, so had to quit. Then I too went on claforan which gave me no problems at all. When the claforan treatment was terminated, I asked for a repeat of the ultrasound and my doc said no need, you will still have sludge. . . ..not true. . . ..all gone! In Tom Grier's book, (Lyme, the Lemon of Diseases--actually, a old spiral bound booklet), he talks about the ways to flush the gall bladder to remove the sludge and keep it from building. As I recall, it seemed a bit agressive at the time for me in my condition. I can look it up if interested.
Guest guest
Hi Dona, Lots of people have lost their gall bladders when on IV Rocephin. It supposedly causes sludging, (whatever that is?) My doc would only allow me on Rocephin for 4 weeks for this reason, and I was on Claforan after that. I am not aware of what can be done to avoid this problem, hope someone else has an answer for you. Guest guest
Hi, Sue I haven't even started Rocephin yet, but it IS imminent, and I figure it couldn't hurt if you could post this information, if it is readily available to you, which I can then save just in case...... Guest guest
Hi Donna -- If you are interested in holistic treatments, I just saw this on the Lyme Disease Newsgroup sci.med.diseases.lyme: The New England Journal of Homeopathy has published an entire issue on Homeopathy and Lyme Disease (Vol 7, No 1). For information call 413-256-5949. The cost is $22. I haven't tried homeopathy for Lyme yet but I've used it for years on other things and have found it effective and safe, with no side effects. On the 5th day, completely empty the bowel using a laxative and or an enema. After purging the bowel, drink 1/2 cup pure cold pressed unprocessed olive oil. This will cause the softened stones to be expelled from the gallbladder when it reacts to the olive oil. Repeat if necessary. Caution: the potential for biliary spasm exists. I never tried this, but someone asked for this information on cleansing the gallbladder. It does state that people from Lyme Support Groups have claimed to have benefited from this without any ill effects.

Guest guest
Whatever you do don't let them remove your gallbladder. After you stop the Rocephan the gallstones will resolve. Good luck. Dona
Guest guest
Well, it's happened. My doctor thinks I have gallstones after just two weeks of Rocephin IV. I'm going for an ultrasound and some bloodwork tomorrow morning. What am I in for folks? What should I let them do or don't do to me? On the verge of cracking up... Having the surgery was in and out.....lazer removal.....and I have been fine since....tho not perfect....I still have problems with rare episodes of pain in that region....(but it could be my liver or the remaining ducts) and usually after Thanksgiving dinner when I pig out on the stuffing and gravy!!!!! I believe also that you probably already had those gallstones...two weeks seems too much to short a time for forming stones.....and instead using the Rocephin caused a flare up...... I recommend surgery....but only if you have insurance to cover it! (Get the lazer version) My mom has refused to have her gallbladder out (afraid of the surgery!) and has to suffer time to time and cannot enjoy eating what she loves. I, on the other hand, can enjoy eating what I like and get all the Rocephin IV's I need.....(I have had three sessions of Rocephin IV and NO PROBLEMS WITH that region....or ducts..) Good Luck whatever you decide! Fransea

Depends on how much pain you are in....I remember when mine was not functioning properly I was in severe pain...constant like a tooth ache..but that was me. I have been very happy that I had mine taken out...but I know there are others who would prefer to keep their organs! I find that not having my gallbladder enables me to continue to use Rocephin which I have had good results with in helping my lyme symptoms. If you did have to have it out, most likely you would have a short recovery period and then could resume the IV meds....but I am not positive on that since my gallbladder came out before I started IV meds.... I sure hope your appt next week is a good one.....discuss it with him.....and hopefully if he is truly lyme literate...he will know the best way to go about it....If the pain in the gallbladder region worsens...then you might need immediate surgery... I was on Rocephin ofr 9 months total. My first ultrasound, about 3 months into tx, showed sludge in my gallbladder. The followup one was completely clear and that after maybe a month, and I had continued on the Rocephin. Marci
Guest guest
Hi Group: I had my apptment with a LLMD today. He told me that my gall bladder won't get better once it's sludged by the Rocephin IV. Further, since I had a hysterectomy before, I probably can't do laprascopic. WHAT AM I IN FOR??? BTW, I send my thoughts and prayers out to Marta. I am so sorry she is sick. Lovette
Guest guest
Well friends, it finally happened - now that I'm on my second round of IV antibiotics, it finally blew my gall bladder and I had emergency surgery last week to remove it [luckily, they did it laproscopically]. The funniest part was in the ER when I explained to them, after my demerol shot, that I was the only one who knew how to do my son's IV and he needed to drip. After expressing disbelief, they finally allowed my son into the ER, and he attached himself to my IV pole and started dripping. Quite a sight! Then, when I was wheeled up to my room, my son came right along with me - a twofer! Unfortunately, Zithro makes him rather obnoxious and started becoming upset that the nurse was interfering with the TV watching, so I sent him home. He was still dripping, so he left, with his IV high over his head, acting as his own IV pole - they must have thought he was escaping!! Guest guest
Hi Lovette, Sorry about the loss of your gall bladder, but it won't be bothering you anymore which is good. It is terrific that they have improved the surgery for this, years ago it was an awful painful procedure. How old is your son, I was trying to get a visual picture of him walking out of the hospital with his IV hanging up in the air.....not very good security at that hospital....LOL....must have been a funny sight to see. Hope you are feeling better. Hugs, Marta >From: " F. Guest guest
I've been on Flagyl 500mg three times a day for about 6 weeks and I can't tell any difference. I'm not even sure what change would be. I can't walk very well and I cough all the time. I have Babesia and Lyme and a positive Tuleremia and I don't really know which causes what or which Flagyl works on. I have lots of other problems but those top the list.
