This is not medical advice just my opinion on what my sources say. It

also depends on their testing methods and chemicals used. Best to ask

your lab.

Drugs that can cause false positive measurements include colchicine,

iron, oxidizing drugs (for example, iodine, bromides, and boric acid),

and reserpine.

There are also several foods and dietary supplements that can cause

this.

A stool hemoccult/blood test is just that....a stool test that tests

for hemoccult/blood or hidden blood in the stool. V

I don't see why iodine would affect that. There shouldn't be blood in your

stool at all. Iodine is iodine.

The iodine might be reacting with the chemicals used to test for the

blood. Vitamin C can give a false negative (you could be bleeding & have it

not show up on the test).

Thanks...this is what I have been reading on different sites..even the

ones that make the kits. V

Steph...you missed the point. I know iodine is iodine, and there

shouldn't be blood in the stool, I'm not that stupid, but due to

diverticulosis and celiac disease, I sometimes have occult blood in

the stool. Some diseases and conditions cause blood in the stool, and

periodic checks can signal further testing. According to some

sources, if iodine is injested before doing the stool hemocult blood

test, it can react with the test kit and give off a false positive

(show that there is blood in the stool when there is not). I was just

wondering if anyone had any experience with this. By you saying that

you didn't see why iodine would affect that, are you saying that this

is not true??? If that's the case I will keep on taking my iodine

before hemocult stool testing that I get periodically, which is due

next week.

I think I will take your comment to my doctor next week and see what

he says anyway as you do seem to be quite knowledgable about iodine.

Thanks. V

My doctor did mention not taking vitamin C. BTW not many people know

that it can create a false negative. Iron should not be taken also,

as it can create a false positive. Thanks. V

No I wasn't saying it wasn't true. I really don't have any knowledge of

iodine reacting with a test. If you are concerned then stop the iodine

before the test for a few days.
