Guest guest
Hi : Wow! That sounds like when I first started down this road. Is this a new GI to you or have you dealth with him before. Perhaps he know little or nothing about Achalasia. It is VERY possible. Did you by any chance ask him about the Manomtry? That is supposed to be the test that tells it all. The one that convinced me was the stomach emptying test. The barium stayed in my esophagus for more than 3 hours. I have the xrays and they truly amaze me. Sometimes the doctors are embarrassed that they do not know alot about the disease and give you alot of " who shot " , but really do not tell you anything. If you have already seen this doctor before and feel confident that he knows about A, I apologize. .... but I must admit, it does not sound like it. , I know how frustrated I was with all the tests before I was diagnosed. You sound like you are handling the frustration well, but how long can you go on. You, on the other hand, had all of this before. You are in New Jersey, you might be close to Cindi in PA, who swears by her doctor. Maybe she can give you some good advise ... I find her to be great. CINDI ... could you check in please. It sounds like I am rambling too ... I hope I have been a little help. Kathie in Pittsburgh who swears by her surgeon! > Today I went to my local GI Doctor I haven't had a Ba swallow or endascopy [sp] In 3 years My eating is getting worse In about the last 2mos I have been living on fluids and soft food My weight is good I haven't lost more then 3 lbs He is saying to do a Ba swallow That's more important then a endascopy Claims last time he thought My LES was okay but my " E " was tight Need I mention that I had a heller with a wrap 6 years ago???? Guest guest
Dear , We are all confused about something, we just don't know what. The first step is knowing you are confused. 1) Is your local gi your " local achalasia gi " ? If not quit wasting your time. 2) Figure out where you want to base your treatment by investigating the gi or surgeon or teaching hospital. You have a lot of options if I remember where you live. 3) Get all your testing done at that hospital. I think almost every doctor is going to want their own barium swallow from the people they trust. You are IMHO wasting time with a local gi if he/she is going to refer you anyway. 4) My total inexperienced guess is that your wrap has interfered with your les. Either scar tissue or whatever problem they have with a wrap and again, my uneducated guess is that the barium is the only thing to show that. The endoscopy, as far as I understand, only looks inside the esophagus and I could be wrong... Dr. Australia???.... the les pushes open easily with an endoscope. That doesn't tell you much except eliminate cancer or other esophagus problems.... maybe reflux if red. 5) Go to my favorite place: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?CMD=search & DB=pubmed Plug in the doctors names that are close and the hospitals and key words and figure out which hospital or doctors you want to go to. Then take the tests. The manometry requires real art and to a certain extent so does the barium swallow to get the pictures when things are happening. The doctors are more comfortable with tests from doctors they know. I sympathise with your frustration and anger. It is a long path to decide what to do when symptoms come back. Figure out which doctors you trust and then take their advice. If you goof around with doctors you wouldn't use for a dilatation or surgery I think you are wasting your time. Again so sorry it has come back, it is possible maybe a dilatation will help. Hugs and more hugs.. Guest guest
Hello : When I first started down this path, I was sent to a GI ... Dr. Glorioso at St. Clair Hospital in Upper ST. Clair (Pittsburgh). It was alot of tests and 2 dialations of the E (not of the LES). MANY tests and procedured later (stomach emptying, 3 barium swallows, 1 modified barium swallow, x rays, manotry, blood work, larygentical fiberoptic ... I could go on and on) before I was finally diagnosed. The GI tried to convince me of Botox. Fortunately, I had found this group and understood that that was NOT the way I wanted to go. Once I talked with him, let him know what I learned, (he was open enough to listen), he agreed with me that I might want to meet with a surgeon and have the myotomy. The GI office said they have " about 8 " Achalasia Patients ... most who have been treaated with Botox. Due to privacy issues, they could not give me names. I asked if they would give my name to any of them to call me. They said they would, but I never heard from anyone. One of the young men who " lurks " in the group, let me know about his surgeon ... then Cindi called her surgeon and asked for the name of someone in Pittsburgh ... then on the SAME DAY of both of these, my GI called me and recommended my surgeon. All three came up with the name ... DR. JAMES LUKETICH ... UPMC PRESBYTERIAN HOSPITAL .. PITSBURGH I called for an appointment ... 6 weeks away. Later that day they called back and got me an appt for 2 weeks. I saw him on March 1 ... he first said if we decide on the surgery it would be 6-8 weeks before he could do it. I said that was ok, at least I could see an end. After going over everything with me, (he learned that I had lost 50 pounds in 14 weeks) he left the room, came back and told me I was scheduled in 2 weeks. ... March 16. I had the Lap Heller with the Tourpet wrap. It will be 10 weeks tomorrow ... and I feel wonderful. I am so grateful to Dr. Luketich as I feel he truly changed my life. I am VERY hopeful that it lasts. This is probably more info than you wanted, but that is how it went in Pittsburgh. If you want his phone number etc, it is on the surgeons list in this site. ... hope this answers your question. Guest guest
I will cut to the chase and not bore you with the long story. My doctor recently started me on 50mcg thyroxine after a blood test showed a TSH of 4.0. I have a new doctor who now thinks thats ridiculous and I should not have been started on the medication. I am left feeling quite upset and confused, can anyone give me any advice please?
Guest guest
Go back to your previous doctor who diagnosed you ginger and refuse to see the other doctor. It is really bad when one doctor contradicts another and leaves the patient in distress.
