Guest guest
Liz, you once said you were interested in iodine absorption. I am presently rereading one of Abraham's articles, and he talks about several issues related to absorption on pages 4 - 5 (in my copy). The Concept of Orthoiodosupplementation and Its Clinical Implications By Abraham, 2004 Article. Includes The Concept of Orthoiodosupplementation, The Various Natural Forms of Iodine, Iodine Metabolism in Man, Thyroidal Metabolism of Iodide, Extrathyroidal Metabolism of Iodide, Misinformation in Medical Texts. http://www.optimox.com/pics/Iodine/IOD-06/IOD_06.htm Footnotes 18 - 26 seem relevant. The Childs article is on line, but not the others. I have added the citation information to the links at Links > 51 Special Topics in Iodine > 03 Physiology of Iodine > 12 Renal Clearance, Serum Levels, Intake Links > 51 Special Topics in Iodine > 03 Physiology of Iodine > 11 Iodine Absorption -- Transdermal and Oral This discussion seems very important, but I cannot yet understand it. So, I'm trying to read his references so that it will hopefully make sense to me. If you can get any of them, I would love to have them for the files. One quote from this section that is likely to be of interest to people on this list is the following: "These data suggest that iodate in bread is very bioavailable, whereas only 10% of iodide in iodized salt was absorbed. On a molar basis, there is 30,000 times more chloride than iodide in iodized salt. Chloride competes with iodide for absorption in the intestinal tract. To this author's knowledge, the low bioavailability of iodide in iodized salt has never been reported." Just before this quote Abraham describes how he came to this conclusion about salt, based on the Pittman and London articles, among others.
