Guest guest
Hiya Jim.......Although I don't need the AFOs yet, your comments about balance are all too familiar! I am a 53 y/o male who was diagnosed about 4 years ago. My hands are more affected by the CMT, but yes, my lower legs and feet are very numb. And I sure know what you mean about the need to touch something stationary, even just to stand still. I just recently got a cane, and when I use it, it really does help..........but my head just isn't where it needs to be to use the cane as often as I should! Sheesh.......vanity. I don't think it's really vanity vs. having to explain to all the people I'm in contact with daily why I need it. Oh well, I'm doing great otherwise and can't even begin to count all my blessings, so the cane thing will come with time. Glad that you're having success with your AFOs, sounds like you had great advice on the type best for you! All the best to you, and the rest of the folks at this site, and a very happy holiday season! And as special HI to Gretchen.....yup, I'm still around and love to read the postings! Merry Christmas, BobD
Guest guest
Well Elaine, I hear you! My husband has made a good cane for me also. But when he's not around, I go for the cane. And Yes, I have both good and bad balance days. I was recently approved for disability and will be receiving my first check next week. Just the stress of getting some bills paid has made me feel better. Is anybody ready for some chatting again? I'm at wmsren97@... most of the time. Would be glad to chat with someone. Guest guest
Hi Dawn, I know exactly how you are feeling. I am 39 and I am so discouraged too. My balance has gotten pretty bad over the last year. I don't feel comfortable just standing without being able to hang on to something. I had foot surgery last Dec. which I hoped would help my walking but I was in a wheelchair for 4 months in casts. I think that made it worse. I am single and don't feel like going out in crowds as it is hard for me to keep my balance. I have been trying to get an AFO that will give me more support. I have been working with my orthotist for 5 months. I hope that the one I pick up on Friday will be the ONE. I have been trying Physical Therapy once a week to see if that would help. I do think that has made some difference. Have you found anything that has helped you? Email me anytime. Bobbie
