Pregnancy/CMT - labor pain alternatives?

Hi all!

I don't post too often, but would like to hear any experience

anyone has on the following subject.

I have CMT 1A, and am in my 4th month of pregnancy. I am not really

looking forward to having a natural birth, because I'm not a big fan

of pain, and I'm afraid that I will get too worn out to do anything

else. However the pain alternatives (epidural, spinal, etc.) scare

me since the little information I could find on the procedures on

CMTers said these were not a good idea. I don't have a doctor that

is familiar with CMT, as I was diagnosed by a Orthopedic surgeon,

tested by another type of doctor, and left to figure everything else

out by myself, so I don't know who to ask.

My question is this. Can I have your opinions as to whether you

know/think this procedure could harm me in the long run? Obviously

if there is a risk that it will badly affect my body, then I will

just endure it naturally.

To all of you women who have had children - what did you do when you

gave birth? Any stories of your experiences would be a great help

since I can't seem to find any information regarding this. Thanks in

advance for any help!

Hi Holly,

I have had 5 babies. I did number #1, #2 and #4 with only dimeral

or staital (sp). I had baby number #3 and #5 with an epidural.

I was very senstive to the epidural. It didn't wear off for hours after I had

the baby. With baby number #5 half of the " normal " dose was to strong. Even

my eye lids went to sleep. I had a hard time swallowing. It was very scary.

So when I say sensitive I mean sensitive. But on the bright side my #3 baby

epidural was great. The epidural doctor knew a little about CMT . I didn't

have any problems at all. Except it took a while to wear off but that was

Okay with me. I didn't have to feel many after pains.

Hi Again,Holly,

After having 5 children and very long labors I can assure

you that a C -section is not necessary just because we have

CMT.

Hi,

I have experienced one labor which was four weeks earlier than expected. This

is my own personal advice, go for a C-section which I had. For me

they only did this after ten hours of labor which did not do any good. I do

not think this period in labor did my CMT any good, but if they had gone

ahead with the C-section it would have been much easier. If you choose to do

this, then you can dicuss in advance the requirement of specialised Anesthetic

treatment regarding your CMT, and this would be easier on you and your baby.

Keep me posted on how you get along. I would love to help further with any

advice, producing a baby is a really wonderful experience and you are so right

to seek our experiences, I so wish I had that at the time.

P.
