Hello,

I am new to this group, I wanted to consult about my father,

who is hypothyroid took for about 2 months

a combination of Iodoral and Eltroxin - one day each

(one day Iodoral, the next day Eltroxin, the next day Iodoral etc). Because he was afraid not to take Eltroxin like the doctor recommended and decided not to ignore my

advice that iodine should improve the situation. I read on the

internet that it is possible to take both of them together.

The blood test results were shocking- much worse than before he started taking Eltroxin (in the past he took only Eltroxin which improved the blood tests, but I wanted to insert the iodine into the picture).

Do you know if the two contradict each other?

Thanks

What was worse? TSH? When supplementing with Iodine you should not use the TSH as a guide for how you are doing. It has been documented that TSH can rise to levels as high as 75 for up to 6 mos with no clinical signs of hypothyroidism. This is how the body stimulates the NIS (sodium iodine symporters) to begin to work again post deficiency and take in more iodine. The best way to monitor thyroid levels is to use Free T3, Free T4 and clinical symptoms. If the patient feels well and shows no signs of hypothyroidism then the TSH is totally irrelevant.

Iris,

Once your father started taking Eltroxin only on alternating days, did he double up the amount of Eltroxin he was taking on those days? Or did he continue with the same dose on the alternating days that he used to take every day? If he continued at the same dosage, but only on alternate days, he was reducing his Eltroxin dose in half, and of course his blood test results would have been much worse.

Iodoral is not a substitute for Eltroxin. It may eventually help his thyroid to work better, and he may eventually be able to reduce his Eltroxin dose because of that. But for now he should take his prescribed dosage of Eltroxin every day. And he should take Iodoral every day. The two do not contradict each other, just the opposite, they are complementary.
