Hi,

I haven't written for some time but like to meet the new members.

I had an infection on my second toe (jokingly I call it the little piggy who

stayed home). I thought it got better but then my toe got red and swollen.

Seem the bug went into my bone. I've been taking cepro but my x-rays don't

show any improvement. However, it is not getting any worse. Treatment varies

as to which Dr. I see. They are: toe bone out, toe bone scrapped, IV in

hospital for 5 weeks. I think it is not as red and swollen, also doesn't

hurt as much but that is no indication since my toes are numb anyway. My toe

started curving under and I was walking on a part not made for walking. I

think that's how I got the original infection.

Anyone out there have this experience or any ideas? I remember you were in

the hospital for some time Gretchen. Did you have to do the IV thing?

A couple of years ago I had an infected toe (my toes curl clear under so I'm

walking on my toenails). I took antibiotics for a year, but it kept coming

back. I finally cured it by wearing a little triangle thing that lifted my

toes so I wasn't walking on the nails. I'm walking on my nails again, and the

infection has not returned.

An infection that gets in the bone cam be very serious and can lead to

amputation if it is cellulitis. I don't know what you have, but you should

probably take whatever it is very seriously.

Has anyone had curled toes that later straightened out???? (without surgery

that is)

Thanks for the toe information.

I went to the infectious disease specialist. He said he could not take a

culture of it since there was no drainage any more. All the infection is in

my toe bone. They can see that from the x-rays that I take every 2 weeks.

All the docs are in agreement the cipro is the antibiotic one takes for bone

infections.

I have seen several doctors and am getting tired of traveling around.

My podiatrist says after it gets better I should have the " procedure " that

will stop me from walking on the curled up part. When I just had the skin

infection, I did put a cushioned tube under my toe and that helped me walk

without the curled under toe. But the Dr. says this is becoming an irritant

on my toe so I should not wear it any longer. All say I should keep my foot

elevated. But I always remember something I want, need, or have to do. So I

get up often.

I will ask about having the IV at home. But I think if I go to a rehab

hospital or nursing home I will not walk around so much. Anyway, it looks a

lot better this week and I have hopes that my next x-ray will show

improvement.

So I am home most of the day and making lots of arts and craft stuff. Also

memorybook making. Also I am becoming addicted to playing computer games.

I'll keep you posted.

Kat,

My daughter had curling of the toes. We didn't know she had CMT at the time

so her doctor performed an operation on her toes, they loosened the tendons

under her toes, now they don't curl! She still wears leg braces because her calf

muscles are so week, but her toes are straight two years after surgery! I hope

this might help! Good luck!

Yes, I've had problems with my toes. Skin grows over my toenails

sometimes, and at other times they burrow into my skin and become

ingrown and infected. The nails on my smaller toes are very small and

go upwards, thereby snagging on everything. I had to get surgery once.

something strange is going on. the toe is swelling and on the one side " meat " is

growing over the nail. this side is also fester. so i don`t know... mom bought

some antibiotic today and something to soak toe in it. but if it won`t work i`ll

be forced to go to surgeon again...
