Guest guest
, My neurologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester whose specialty is CMT and peripheral nerve disorders, explained to me how MS is diagnosed, because I asked. People with MS have normal EMG's, usually have lesions on the brain which are found in a MRI, and other indicators found in the spinal fluid extracted in a lumbar puncture. As I mentioned in a previous e-mail, I was diagnosed with CMT over 6 years ago, and learned 2 weeks ago that I don't have it. Even though my symptoms mimic those of CMT and I had very abnormal EMGs and Nerve Conduction studies, the physical exam revealed muscle weakness in other areas of my body that would not be consistent with a CMT diagnosis. That's why my doctor urged me to go ahead with the nerve and muscle biopsy to determine what I do have. I had them done 8 days ago and the incisions are healing nicely. The muscle biopsy was done in my right tricep and I have nearly regained complete range of motion there. The dressing just came off yesterday and the incision is healing. My sural nerve biopsy in my right leg is also healing although I do have strange " electric shock " sensations and numbness there. My understanding is that they will go away in time. Having these biopsies was a huge decision for me and my family, and I totally understand your hesitancy. I guess I'll be able to tell you whether I was glad I had them when I get the results later this week. If it turns out that my condition is treatable, then I'll have no regrets. If not, I know that I've done everything I can to get to the bottom of my problem. I prayed a lot about my decision and I have to believe I did the right thing for me.
