Guest guest
Yes, the literal thing does get tough. A friend said to her ASD child " If wishes were horses then beggars would ride " . That took the rest of the day to explain. Valeri Sayings 's speech therapist gave us some " homework " for the holidays, learning about " idioms " . These phrases which we all say, and take for granted that others understand, don't always make sense to our children. The easiest example being " It's raining cats and dogs " - has anyone else's child looked to the sky excitedly for poodles? They take everything so literally. Anyway, it's been a big success, and has enjoyed looking at the pictures and learning various " silly " phrases. Hopefully this may help her make a bit more sense out of conversations. If anyone else is interested I could probably scan the pics/phrases for you. Debbie
