Guest guest
, A nerve biopsy is another 'diagnostic tool' for many neurological disorders. But, something doesn't sound right. Was this Dr. at an MDA clinic? If your doctor is suggested a nerve biopsy, just to lower the cost of a simple, blood test that DNA is, sounds 'iffy'. Find out WHY they won't just do the full CMT DNA tests WITHOUT the biopsy. Since your son is so young, it is alot easier to get blood taken than a biopsy. So, what I would suggest, is first, ask for the DNA test FIRST. IF that test comes back negative for CMT, perhaps then the biopsy. Sounds like the Dr. is trying to take you for a ride, and why put a child through something unnecessary. Sounds like the Dr. is trying to make a deal - kind of unprofessional. Did this doctor do any of the manual neurological tests or watch your son walk for awhile? Is this Dr. at the MDA clinic? Sorry for the questions, but I forgot some of the background on this. A nerve biopsy can always be done later. And you know, from my own nerve biopsy, Drs. were still unable to tell if I have Type 1 or 2. But that test did rule out completely several other disorders - so you see, there is the diagnostic tool. But I was 14, and not a little child. ~ Gretchen
Guest guest
i've had three doctors ask for the nerve biopsy so far. two from the shriner's hospital in South Carolina. one was in genetics and the other was his regular doctor there, not a neurologist. also the last one was a doctor in Richmond Va. he's a neurologist and he works at the MDA clinic there. with the cost of the DNA test, it will be paid for by the shriner's. so i am guessing that is why they want to watch the cost. i can't afford the $35 hundred for it lol. renee
