Guest guest
Not sure if this helps: My NT son had a phase of stinky breath, tried everything - mouthwash, different extra minty toothpaste, more brushing etc (poor kid!) Then friend who is GP recommended probiotics (we actually used yalkult). It worked a treat and for him not a problem since. There must be some sort of good gut bug imbalance that causes the stinky breath phenonemon. Guest guest
I tried to order the new Kirkmans probio from Nutricentre but they didn't have it in, that was two weeks ago now, so maybe next time, would be interested in how you get on with it. Also Iv'e been reading stuff lately where people are saying we should be rotating probio's, is that so? We have been using multi flora for the longest time now, but I think we need something new. Guest guest
This might be of no help in the UK, but VRP.com is having a buy three get one free sale on Culturelle until the end of November. I just stocked up myself cause the stuff is pricey. I also have started using the new probiotics from Kirkmans. Only been three days so I've nothing to report other than it is easer opening up one capsule than four of the probiogold. Also I noticed in the new one that there are 10 billion of the bifidobacterium infantis which according to something I read somewhere is very helpful for people with IBS. My son doesn't have IBS but I thought it might be helpful for anyone's child who might be leaning that way. Guest guest
Sometimes patients are complaining of bad breath simply because they're wearing clothes that are too tight on their belly. - the bad smell could just be digestive juices, etc not being able to go down properly. It could also be ketosis - but in my experience it can be something as simple as too tight of clothing. Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile Re: bad breath We check Zn levels and Zn is WNL. Guest guest
Bad breath is also a possibility from the "bad gut" bacteria overrunning the good bacteria. This can be related to trauma to the gut like surgery, or antibiotic therapy or drinking things like soda or caffeine. We have our patients take probiotic pills as this will put the good bacteria back into the body and establish a balance of good vs bad bacteria again. jdm Janelle D. Guest guest
Dear , It has been briefly mentioned, but the underlying cause of bad breath is the fact there is rotting food sitting in your esophagus. Treat that problem and the breath problem should lessen. Tell us how you have been treated before. Take some carbonated water, that forces the LES open for some of us and helps the food go down, thus the smell should lessen. And obviously avoid garlic and other smelly things. But the underlying issue is probably untreated achalasia. Sandy > > Dear all > > Apologies if this has been covered before but do fellow achalasians suffer from bad breath? > > Mine is very bad at times although I am able to mask it using special toothpaste and mouthwash. > > [it's definitely not my teeth that are the problem as I have very good teeth]. > > My GP says it's just one of those things.... > > Thanks, (UK) > >
Guest guest
Sandy Thanks for the reply. I have had achalasia since 2003 and in that time, I've had three dilatations (the most recent being Dec 2007). I will not have another one; it will definitely be the Heller's Myotomy next. I thought the bad breath was probably related to rotting food. Do you know if this is dangerous in any way? I was hoping to get a few more years under my belt before I go for surgery. I can pretty much eat anything I want at the moment although bread can be a bit of a struggle on occasion. If bad breath is the only implication, then I'm happy to live with it for a while longer. Regards, > Dear , > It has been briefly mentioned, but the underlying cause of bad breath is the fact there is rotting food sitting in your esophagus. Guest guest
Dear , Please look over old messages about waiting. Your esophagus is likely stretching and that makes surgery less likely to be successful. The reason you can eat pretty well is because your esophagus is likely already stretched some and the food is sitting there. Those of us that had more severe symptoms probably didn't have a stretched esophagus and there is some of the opinion that the surgery is more successful the less stretched. Actually most any surgeon will tell you that. To manage achalasia well, into your later years I would highly recommend getting the surgery before your esophagus stretches. Ray from OC will post he has waited... but he is older than dirt, I think as he says. He also has other health issues. The bad breath... sometimes we go into gross topics. But, if you are in a position where you come into contact with other people, likely you are not aware of what a turnoff it is. It could be affecting all your interactions with loved ones, coworkers and clients. It is a sensitive subject... but really it does matter a lot. Smell is very important and the mints do not cover that up. We support any decision members here make, but having said that, I can't remember anyone saying they are glad they waited, except Ray. Many many post they wish they had had a myotomy earlier. Maybe other members will post that did wait. I waited for a while, also after dialations, but the effect it has on your family to have a chronically ill person is much more than you may realize. Resentment, guilt etc. all spiral around and around, assuming you are able to have the surgery. Achalasia affects the whole family.
