I had one done at 16, and the pain still haunts me. It was like

sticking my finger into an electrical socket. The only thing that is

worse(IMHO) is a nerve biopsy. I still have pain from that, and I'm 32

now. I'd ask your doctor if it's really needed for diagnosis- not just

for a reference test. Ask about blood testing instead- it's more

expensive but MDA covers it. Does your son have physical symptoms, like

foot or hand deformity or pain?

,

If you can break it down and tell me what nerves were tested and the

firing, I can at least tell you what 'normal' is, and this is

a 'range'. My tests have always been 'normal'. I sympathesize with

your son. My first one, with EMG, was so horrid, it was not completed

because all I did was scream and beg my mother to get me out of there.

I was 15. About 6 months later, my father found another doctor for me

and had a firm talk with me, I agreed to go try the testing, both EMG

and NCV. It was still pretty bad, but at least in a private office and

not a 'clinical' setting, the doctors and staff were friendlier and

kinder to me, and not all male. I also did not have to completely

undress this time. My last EMG/NCV (about 9-10 years ago) - as an

adult - showed all normal readings - with some reinnervation, which

opened my eyes as to me having a possible CMT Type 2.
