Guest guest
Well, I am only fused L4L5S1; that took place on Sept 27. But I really hurt in my hips for a long time. Just in the last month has my pain level really decreased, although I still have this darn nighttime sciatica sometimes. But I know what you mean about the pain in the hips. My fusion area stopped hurting early on, but my hips! they hurt for a long time. It was especially in my left hip, since that was where the sciatica was and is, but in the last month it shifted to my right hip. Go figure! But that seems to be getting better. I guess things are shifting around down there as the fusion pulls alot of muscles this way and that. And I just had the fusion for the degeneration of my lumbar region and the 40 degree curve; I did not have my thoracic curve done, which is 50 or 60. By the way, that feels very good these days. I know some are skeptical of this approach, but so far so good. And I'm walking like crazy. Debbie Randie Meyer <taknitlite@...> wrote: I have a different question. I was recently fused to my sacrum (L5-S1). I had previously been fused from T4-L5 almost 3 years ago. I remember that surgery as being very painful, but by 6 weeks I was more or less off pain meds. Now, 6 weeks out of surgery, I'm still hurting quite a bit in the hips. (I actually had a 2 part surgery, because I also had a revision of L20-L4 where I hadn't fused). But all that seems ok. I have 3 incisions, which don't hurt much, and my back is tender but not bad. But my hips! If I accidently hit something with my foot, like one of my dogs' bones, or step into a slight dip in the ground, or if one of my dogs bumps my leg, OMG. It sends a searing pain up through my right hip and hurts for a long time. But it's my whole pelvis area I guess that hurts. So my question is, who else who has been fused to S1 knows how long it takes to stop hurting so much? And is this normal amount of pain? Guest guest
Hi, You say that you hurt in your hips. Well, I did too and when I realized what caused it, I felt a little stupid. I'm fused T2 to L5. Doctor told me not to lay on stomach. That left my sides and back. But, I layed on my sides more than I ever had before and THAT was why my hips hurt, both sides. It went away after a couple of years. Guess my hips had to 'toughen up!' Lj debbie brickley <debbiebrickley@...> wrote: Well, I am only fused L4L5S1; that took place on Sept 27. Guest guest
A good point you made, Lana. But, I don't have any other way to lie. I can't lie on my stomach, I can't lie on my back because I'm prone to a little sleep apnea (just doesn't feel comfortable to breathe that way), so that leaves my sides. Now I can't really lie too well on my left side, because that's the leg with sciatica and it makes it worse. So it's the right side. I kinda developed a postion where I lie on my right side but towards by stomach, with my left knee drawn up. The sciatica does seem to be getting a little better over time, so I sometimes lie on my left side for awhile. Presently, I'm in Baltimore with my grandkids. They're 3 and 1: I can feel my thoracic curvature more in the last couple of days then for a long while. I'm not picking them up, but just all the activity, and when I first got in the car with them, I twisted to see the little one in the back seat, probably more than I have twisted in 6 weeks. I forgot! Makes me very aware of that curve that I thought I could live with! Debbie Lana Jarvis <fyfer1949@...> wrote: Hi, You say that you hurt in your hips. Guest guest
Well, Debbie, as someone pointed out only two messages ago, I probably had bursitis in my hips from laying on them 80% of the time. I have some apnea, too, and (ehem, snore). Never complained about it to the MD, and thought it was just something I had to 'figure out' and solve on my own. ya. I think that's why my CMT was diagnosed so late, too! Guest guest
Lana: you and others make a good point. My hips have hurt for over 15 years; I remember getting a pelvic Xray a long time ago bc I c/o pain in both hips. Guest guest
Chiming in...I, too, have sleep apnea. I tried the c-pap machine several years ago and it made by fibromyalgia worse even tho it was supposed to do the opposite. I'd be so worn out after a night with the c-pap that I felt like I'd been in a marathon the next day. (tried the bi-cap, too). I tried a mouth piece to but have such an overbite that it was a strain on the device and it hurt because it ground into my gums. I gave up on the machine and mouthpiece and just snore to my own rhythm. (husband has to live with it) If I lay on my side my hip hurts so on the back I lay. Guest guest
Hi Jolene, Do you know - or does anyone know - if people with scoliosis tend to have sleep apnea? My husband says I snore and wake myself up during the night - and I'm going for a sleep test next week. I'm exhausted all the time - have been my whole life (I'm in my 50's now and on SSDI after my revision in 2003). Thanks, Andra Boulder CO Chiming in...I, too, have sleep apnea. Guest guest
Hi Andy, I don't know if people with scolisis are proned to apnea, but my doctors says that with my lung restriction it might be probable that the CO2 gets trapped in my lungs at night from shallow night breathing and may be causing apnea in my case. (the co2 in not being released because of my small lungs). So if that is true of other scolotics with thoracic scoliosis lung restriction there may be a connection. I didn't always 'snore'...just in the last 10 years or so. Not everyone who has scoliosis has apnea though. Btw, I had an impossible night trying to sleep in a lab because of the mattress. They don't broadcast it, but you CAN have the test at home. Not every monitor is hooked up when you have a home test, but still it a valid reading. They will instruct you how to set up the recorder to do it at home after they apply the chest thingy. Jolene **************Planning your summer road trip? Check out AOL Travel Guides. Check them out at www.buteyko.info/. Good luck! M. Andy Stanton <andystanton@...> wrote: Hi Jolene, Do you know - or does anyone know - if people with scoliosis tend to have sleep apnea?
