Guest guest
hi lindsay, I can't really comment. My son has stainless steel rods and had his surgery on May 5th. It does not appear to effect his health thus far and has not had hair loss. I will be thinking of you and hope things improve. Guest guest
Getting the rods removed is not a difficult surgery--compared with the original. Since everything is fused it's just a matter of cutting you open, taking them out and sewing you back up. That's what I was told anyway, before I had my surgery. My surgeon said sometimes thin people need to remove the rods due to discomfort, and it's not a bad surgery. Go for it, if it's making you sick. Everyone is different and you might be allergic. Question about titanium rods and hair loss Hi everyone, I'm new to the group and had a few questions I hope I can get info on. I had surgery in 1991 at Texas ish Rite Hospital at the age of 13. I'm fused from T5-T11. The rods run from T4-L1. I believe they are titanium. Ever since this sugery my health has never been the same. My hair started falling out 3 months after the surgery and I never regained my energy level. Follow-up xrays always show my spine fused perfectly. I had a 50 degree curve and its 20-25 degrees now. I believe strongly my body has a problem with the titanium. I also had breast implants and they have made me sick too. I do not know if I have a genetic type that rejects foreign objects in an odd way or its some innate property of the implants but I want the rods out. Now that I know breast implants cause me problems. I think the rods could too. I'm not here to ask if people agree or disagree that titanium rods can make you sick. Its fine if everyone here thinks I'm wrong. All I want to know is if anyone else had hair loss after the rods were put in that DID NOT stop or return? And how complicated and risky is rod removal? Please help me its so hard to even find people with this surgery to ask questions too. Any info is greatly appreciated,
Guest guest
I was thin and had to have the top part of my rod removed because it was causing pain. Of course it was not as bad as the original. Mine was only 2 years after my initial surgery and I was told that he had to chip away at part of the fusion because it fused so well that you couldn't even see some of the rod. It was about 2 hours and it still was a recovery period. Not to scare you though about 3 months after that the thoracic part of my fusion totally fractured and had to have the whole top part of it redone from the front and back. That was a BIG surgery. Was never confirmed if the removal caused it or that I was getting pain in the first place because the spine was trying to curve above the rod and was putting pressure on the rod. During the revision the surgeon fused me higher than the original surgery. **************Get trade secrets for amazing burgers. Watch " Cooking with Tyler Florence " on AOL Food. Guest guest
, There should be a test for allergic reaction to titantium (or other metals) that can be reformed before rod removal surgery would be considered. Since they were done in 91 an allergic reaction would seem to be more than hair loss. Have you had hormore testing to see if you are low in one that could attribute to hair loss. Or looked into alopecia (sp?). It is very common to lose hair after major surgery but it usually stops after several months. Having rods taken out is extremely major surgery. Guest guest
Dear Lin, You have signs of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. Scoliosis, hair loss and small or no breasts are all signs of it. Please see your general practitioner and ask to be referred to a neurologist for nerve conduction test and an EMG. I didn't find out until March, and I'm 58. I'm in a lot of pain bc of the CMT. You have nothing to lose to be tested. Fyfer linzlu25 <linzlu25@...> wrote: Hi everyone, I'm new to the group and had a few questions I hope I can get info on.
