Guest guest
Hi, Vik, I'm sorry to hear about your hip. Yes, I have had lots of problems with my hips, especially the left one. I limped for 20 years, and the limp and the hip pain went away after scoli surgery in 2002. My surgeon told me that people with scoli don't have one leg longer than the other: he measured mine twice from the hip to heel, both legs were the same length. But, the scoli curve(s) will give the illusion that they are different lengths. Have your scoli MD measure your legs, not the GP, as he may not know how to meassure properly. But, you say you have sensory loss in your hip as opposed to having pain. And, you say you have a bunion or two and scoliosis. So do I. I had carpal tunnel in both wrists for which I had a splint, but no operation for that, as the splints worked and the pain in the wrists goes away if I keep them warm and wear the splint, when I get pain, had a heel spur removed in 1982, have hand bone deformities like bent fingers, water cysts and a tremor of the hands and head, which aren't always noticable in the head. Well, I think there are several considerations. Xrays of your hip are a good idea. If nothing shows up on them, ask for an ortho to look at your hip. He may order an MRI to rule out any structural stuff going on. And, if still nothing shows up, I'd recommend getting nerve conduction tests and an EMG to rule out Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease. Bone deformities of all kinds and sensory loss, especially in the feet and hands, are common with CMT. In 28% of CMT patients, scoli is present. Please, complain, complain, complain or the MDs won't do what they need to do for you. I have CMT had have sensory loss from my feet to my hips. That means, I have trouble sensing heat and cold, worse in the feet and gradually getting better as something cold goes up the leg: in my case, the neurologist used a cold reflex hammer to test for that. Yesterday, I had to have a cortisone shot in the hip joint due to pain for stress fractures and a torn tendon that I've had since Sept. 2007!!! Today, I feel so much better. The fractures are half healed after spending 80% of my time in a wheelchair or just sitting, but the pain kept me from walking better than I could have. I've written a lot to think about, Vic, I know that. But, start with the xrays, and progress to the MRI and nerve conduction tests and EMT, and see what shows up. (My bunions aren't bad enough, yet, for surgery. I can still wear closed-heel, normal-looking shoes, so I'm in a holding pattern for that.) Take care. Guest guest
I too have bunions. I have a different question and was wondering if anyone else ever had this problem. I had 3 surgeries for the scoliosis. The original posterior only from T4-L4, a partial rod removal because of pain, then a total anterior/posterior revision from T1-L4. It's been 8 years since my revision surgery. I only had a check up in March and was so happy when Dr. Boachie said that I didn't have to come back for 2 years since everything looked good. Guest guest
Thankyou for ur reply hun,god u av been in the wars a bit! I do occasionally get pain in my hip and it lasts for up to a few weeks.i have to wear an orthotic in my shoe to level my hips out as the specialist found that my right leg was nearly half an inch shorter & when I am able to go out & about it makes me feel loads taller(im already 5`8)My curve is not noticable from the outside(yet) the docs failed to spot the scoliosis a few yrs ago because as the curve had rotated the vertabrae,it gave a false spinal line so to them it looked normal and straight, obviously thats why it took them 17years to realise!!I am due at hospital friday so hope to be asking a lot of questions.Im also due to see the nurse thursday due to high blood pressure because of the pain & painkillers,so hopefully find out about my foot coz excuse my language-it bloody hurts now! Thanks again for ur advice hun.xx ________________________________ From: Lana Jarvis <fyfer1949@...> Scoliosis Treatment Sent: Tuesday, November 11, 2008 6:04:23 PM Subject: Re: Hope every1 is ok Hi, Vik, I'm sorry to hear about your hip. Guest guest
Hi Vik, Sorry to hear about your problems. It seems that once you have scoliosis, you just continually have problems your whole life. I thought mine was taken care of after 2 surgeries but now it's back in the L4-S1 area and I am leaning again. I too have a limp that has developed in the past year (after having sciatica). It's kind of embarrasing but the people who know what's wrong, doesn't think a thing about it. The hard part for me is walking through stores, etc. I hope I don't end up in a wheelchair but being only 29, I'm sure that in my old age, it'll happen. Speaking of bunions...funny you should mention that. I too have bunions on both feet. I've had them my whole life and have always had to get wide width shoes or a size bigger than usual in normal width. I have never been able to wear heels as my ankles are too weak and I've always sprained them frequently. They just kind of " give out " on me for no reason. I never even knew that my foot things were bunions until a couple of years ago. No one has ever said anything about it. I thought it was just normal. I always just thought it was my bone and how my feet grew. I never realized that it actually had a name and that they were bunions. So, it would be interesting to hear or do a study about how many people have problems like this with scoliosis. Good luck at the doc! > > Hello again, hope every1 is ok(apart from the obvious!) > My doc has finally given me tablets that work and its so much better to > not be in complete agony day in day out. > My left hip is somewhat of a mystery at the moment-Obviously the > majority of scoliosis sufferers have wonky hips wiv 1 leg shorter than > the other,I was wondering if any1 has encountered any problems with > their hips?I can hardly feel my left hip,it seems to have half > dissapeared and I wanted the MRI people to check it out in the scan but > there was nothing to say to do it,wondering if I should try and > persuade the doc to get it xrayed as it hasnt been yet,It doesnt cause > me any pain but I do have very slightly less sensation on the thigh > area and my leg has given way few times,so it would be great to hear > any experiences/complications. > The other thing I wanted to ask is if any1 has suffered from bunions,as > Ive just read on a medical site that bunions are common in scoliosis > sufferers,Ive got quite a painful 1 on my longer leg side(didnt > realsise u r advised to have it operated on-the way im going,i may as > well buy a lifetime hospital pass!!!)Just be great to hear anything > about either of these.Kindest regards to all > Vicci x >
Guest guest
Dear Vic, A lot of pain over time like yours causes high blood pressure! Mine went away as soon as I had the surgery. Today, I saw the neurologist Dr. Tandon and he told me I need leg braces. At the appointment, my bp was 114 over 65. It used to be 145 over 120! Well, keep this in mind, too, that a lot pain over time can cause high blood pressure. Guest guest
I have a lot of problems with my hips, mostly the left one. Right now it is so sensitive it hurts to wear even baggy sweats. The pain in my hip is as bad as my back pain. Sitting in hot water helps some. www.ginasmakingsandmusings.blogspot.com On Nov 10, 2008, at 9:00 PM, " vik " <vicciwalford@...> wrote: > Hello again, hope every1 is ok(apart from the obvious!) > My doc has finally given me tablets that work and its so much better > to > not be in complete agony day in day out. > My left hip is somewhat of a mystery at the moment-Obviously the > majority of scoliosis sufferers have wonky hips wiv 1 leg shorter than > the other,I was wondering if any1 has encountered any problems with > their hips?I can hardly feel my left hip,it seems to have half > dissapeared and I wanted the MRI people to check it out in the scan > but > there was nothing to say to do it,wondering if I should try and > persuade the doc to get it xrayed as it hasnt been yet,It doesnt cause > me any pain but I do have very slightly less sensation on the thigh > area and my leg has given way few times,so it would be great to hear > any experiences/complications. > The other thing I wanted to ask is if any1 has suffered from > bunions,as > Ive just read on a medical site that bunions are common in scoliosis > sufferers,Ive got quite a painful 1 on my longer leg side(didnt > realsise u r advised to have it operated on-the way im going,i may as > well buy a lifetime hospital pass!!!)Just be great to hear anything > about either of these.Kindest regards to all > Vicci x > >
Guest guest
There are 120 different operations for bunions! depending on the curve degree(wen avent we heard that before lol) luckily mine are only mild at the moment, but if you dont get them sorted, they can become worse with time(like everything else we go through)Ive never worn high or pointed shoes(im a bit of a tomboy) so I was a bit suprised myself!its been quite good to hear of other ppl having the same as most docs wouldnt even think about bunions being a problem with us scoliosis sufferers.i to walk with a limp and I am thinking of getting myself some crutches to take a bit of pressure off when Im out and about(although carrying even the lightest of shopping will be made a bit more difficult!)it might help.Ive got my pilates set-it made me laugh seeing the video of two young fit slender girls putting their toes behind their heads-Im thinking thats probably not goin to happen for me but it was worth a giggle.I found a couple of lower back stretches that I can do,although I ache a lot after,I try and think positive and remember its helping my muscles strengthen up. ________________________________ From: <ladams9200@...> Scoliosis Treatment Sent: Tuesday, November 11, 2008 10:37:54 PM Subject: Re: Hope every1 is ok Hi Vik, Sorry to hear about your problems. Guest guest
My very best advice is this: do absolutely NOTHING after your fusion revisions. It helps not only with the healing, but it helps with nonfusion disease. Guest guest
Hi, , have you considered asking your doctor about a cortisone shot in the hip joint? I just had one. Remember all my notes recently, since May(!) about my left hip pain? I had a shot two days ago, and I have no pain and I don't limp. Guest guest
I can have severe pain in my right pelvic bone - worse when I was lying down. (I have not had any surgery and am 60 with a 62 degree curve). The orthopedic doctor said that maybe my ribs were rubbing on it; which i doubted because it didn't show that in the x-ray. But he did give me a cortisone shot and it helped for maybe a month and then back to the same problem. However, it seems to have gotten better; still painful but not as severe. I've heard of others that say their ribs are rubbing on the pelvice. I go to Curves to keep up my flexibility and one day I was pushign myself and I did actually feel some bones rubbing that made me think that this could be the cause. As far as actual hip pain, it's usually my sciatic in the opposite hip that flairs up on me.Martha Knott/What-Knott Farm www.whatknottfarm.com Scoliosis Treatment@...: makeyellow@...: Wed, 12 Nov 2008 21:22:44 -0600Subject: Re: Hope every1 is ok I haven't tried that. Guest guest
Chiming in....I have that rib rubbing pelvis bone thingy at times. It really disables me for weeks. In that situation I can't get out of bed so I'm not able to go to the doctor for a shot. It is starting now. I'm allergic to opiates but I wonder if a strong nsaid might help. Guest guest
I also had good results from the injection. I'm going to get 2 more for my other screw areas, since I have to wait to get them removed. Guest guest
What is sciatic? I am having terrible pain in my left hip. At first I thought it was just pressure from my left curve. The pain is constant lately though and most recently expands down my left leg! Guest guest
sounds like you may have it as the pain radiates down your leg. I'm not good at explaining it but someon showed me a good exercise for it and that has helped me. Maybe someone else is better at explaining or do a google search for it. Sorry I'm not more helpful.Martha Knott/What-Knott Farm www.whatknottfarm.com Scoliosis Treatment@...: mollymol6@...: Thu, 13 Nov 2008 16:30:19 -0800Subject: RE: Hope every1 is ok What is sciatic? Guest guest
Hello: I read the msgs sometimes but don't ever write. It is interesting though to hear that others suffer from a lot of the same things - must mean it is all related to the scoliosis. I had my rods and fusion done in 1970 - never had the rods out but now I have a problem cause I have oestoporosis and am shrinking - of course the rods dont shrink so the one is sticking out pretty good. I am waiting to get into a specialist cause they will probably have to cut it down or something. It hasn't come through the skin yet but any time now it looks like it could. I also have had trouble with my hips and I have bunions too. Never really thought those things were all related. I am pretty lucky cause even though I have pain every day it has never been bad enough to do anything about it - I can't imagine what a day would be like where nothing hurt - wouldn't that be heaven! But I can honestly say that I have managed to live a pretty normal life and scoliosis is just part of who I am. Guest guest
Hello Sara, It sounds like you may have the start of sciatica. Sciatica is when your sciatic nerve (the main nerve that breaks off from your spinal cord around the L2-L3 region down your legs) is pinched for whatever reason or there is pressure on it. Even the least little bit can cause a problem. I had it last September ('07) and I ended up in the ER and flat on my back for a week because I couldn't walk. The pain was so excruciating. I've had 2 kidney stones, 2 fusion surgeries, a c- section, and that pain...sciatica pain...was the worst of any of them! I had to literally drag my leg holding onto people and I was screaming to cut my leg off! I had to take anti-inflammatories and pain killers and eventually, it let up. But ever since, I've had problems with walking and my scoliosis has progressed in the L4-S1 area, where I'm not fused. My advice for you is to take it easy and lay as much as possible. Take anti-inflammatories and pain meds as much as possible, on schedule, and don't move unless you have to. I know it's hard but it's very necessary for it to go away. For whatever reason, your nerve is being compressed somehow/someway and it's my understanding that it is the only way to relieve it. Time, rest, and meds. Good luck Sara...I know it's no fun and for your sake, I hope it's not sciatica. But if it is, you'll make it through it. Just make sure no one actually cuts your leg off! :0) > > What is sciatic? Guest guest
Thanks ! I wondered if that is what is was and I definately thought it was related to the scoliosis. I have been laying low this week - had to. I also have tremendous fatigue and wondering if that is connected to the scoliosis as well. You are very helpful and your support greatly appreciated. Guest guest
Your welcome Sara. I really do hope you feel better soon! The fatigue...well, it could be from anything. I've noticed that since my scoliosis has progressed I have become an insomniac. There are some nights I just don't go to bed until about 4am. It's ridiculous and I hate it. But I'm in pain most of the time anymore. My husband and I went Christmas shopping for our daughter last night and it was all I could do to make it through the stores but I wasn't going to let it stop me. We have been looking forward for this for such a long time. If you are stressed out (which I'm sure you are, especially having sciatica) or in pain, you will probably be fatigued. Feel better soon! > > Thanks ! I wondered if that is what is was and I definately thought it was related to the scoliosis. I have been laying low this week - had to.
