Guest guest
Sara, here is a dumb question. But, how did you know it was starting to crush your lungs and heart? I have a story similar to yours and was told a long time ago that I could experience what you are going through. Thanks!! Joann 16-year-old daughter--surgery Hi, My 16-year-old daughter is scheduled for fusion surgery 8/11. She was diagnosed with scoliosis about 4 yrs ago. She did the brace thing but to no avail. She currently has a 58 degree thoracic curve and a 37 degree compensatory lumbar curve. Her doctor is planning to fuse T5 to L2 with titanium rods. We've gotten 2 opinions so far and plan to get a 3rd before the surgery. My daughter is all for the surgery, she's just a little anxious. I, however, am terrified. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you, Robin Ahearn
Guest guest
Joann - I also have asthma. It was very bad for years but is well under control now. Yet, I am having trouble breathing. I can't walk even short distances. I am so tired all the time. I have to lay down often even though I might not sleep. I have been to my pulmonary dr. several times in the last few months and he continues to tell me my lungs are clear. My breathing is diminished though. He says he believes it is the spine. Breathing medication will not help. I spent three days in the hospital a year ago June with chest pain - which I still get occassional. My heart races from time to time. All heart tests are okay and yet there is some strain. Again, heart medication is not the answer. I have seen one scoliosis specialist in Boston and hope to get another opinion this summer. Surgery is recommended - I am just trying to figure out how we as a family can cope without my income for 6 months or more. have you seen a surgeon? Good luck Joann. ________________________________ From: Joann <bunnypete@...> Scoliosis Treatment Sent: Wed, July 6, 2011 11:55:09 AM Subject: Re: SARA DOLAN--16-year-old daughter--surgery  Sara, here is a dumb question. Guest guest
Thank you Sara. I have not seen a surgeon in years. Like others, I was diagnosed when I was just a kid. Surgery was recommended, but my parents said no. I'm now almost 41, and I think I am getting arthritis in my spine, my hips hurt, and of course, my back hurts pretty much everywhere. I actually live north of Providence. What surgeon in Boston do you see?? Joann 16-year-old daughter--surgery Hi, My 16-year-old daughter is scheduled for fusion surgery 8/11. Guest guest
Joann - I saw Dr. Glazer at Beth Israel Hosp. last summer and I would like to also get an opinion from Dr. Rand in Boston. Both are recommended on the scoliosis sites - specialists in Adult scoliosis. A couple of people told me that they did not care for Dr. Rand but I am more interested in the best outcome than bedside manner. I believe he is at New England Baptist. Let me know what you decide. Sara ________________________________ From: Joann <bunnypete@...> Scoliosis Treatment Sent: Mon, July 11, 2011 11:21:35 PM Subject: Re: SARA DOLAN--16-year-old daughter--surgery  Thank you Sara. Guest guest
Have you tried Shriners Hospitals? They provide top notch medical treatment for scoliosis including diagnosis, 'second opinions', bracing and surgery all at no cost including transportation to and from the closest location to where you live.
