Guest guest
Hi Yes, you can have pain joint pain with scoliosis. I have severe scoliosis. My surgery consult is next week. My main problem is lower back pain especially in the L5. My lower spine is at 61 degrees & falling apart/collapsing. I had a pinched nerve that required an epidural injection under local anesthesia with a fluoroscopic xray. Have you been seen by a doctor for your scoliosis & pain? Sacroiliac pain associated with scoliosis? Has anyone had sacroiliac joint pain that is associated with Scoliosis? I am trying to figure out if my lower back pain is connected to scoliosis. I have a curved spine that was noticed when I was about 10. Some years later I started having lower back pain and was prescribed physical therapy. The pain has been off and on since but now it is getting much worse. It actually gets unbearable around menstruation time. I was wondering if anyone with scoliosis has had a similar issue or what has worked best. Thank you for any help!
Guest guest
I have scoliosis / Harrington rod surgery. My surgery was done in 1977 and up until about 5 years ago I only had minor back stiffness. For the past 5 years I have had various levels of pain which did increase around menstruation time. I had a CT Myelogram two years ago and found out that my lowest vertebrae levels L3/L4, L4/L5, L5/S1 which are unfused (I am fused from T4 - L3) have arthritis in the facet joints, the discs are bulging mildly and I had a synovial cyst. The cyst caused me intense pain as it caused my back muscles to tighten up tremendously and sciatic pain down my right leg. The cyst was pushing on the nerve roots inside the spinal canal. Anyway, I was able to find a doctor who was able to rupture the cyst and my pain is much less. That is not to say I am in great shape. I still have lower back pain when I stand or walk too much. I am pain free when I am sitting or lying down. I have found that stretching my hamstrings, lower back, and butt muscles - particularly the piriformis muscle, really helps reduce the pain and stiffness. You probably should be seen by a spine/scoliosis specialist to see what is happening with your curvature. It could be the curvature has gotten worse, or you may simply have lower back strain. It's best to see a scoliosis specialist as they will be much more familiar with the different issues people such as us run into with curved spines. Regular orthopedic doctors don't have the experience. You can go to www.srs.org to look for a scoliosis doctor in your area. Guest guest
Lower back pain and sacro iliac pain is my most prominent symptom of scoliosis. After my lower back fusion, my PT and I worked diligently to get past the SI pain. Your lower back takes all the weight of trying to hold up your crooked upper back. And it only gets more pronounced as you age. Debbie From: lau91282 <lau91282@...> Subject: Sacroiliac pain associated with scoliosis? Guest guest
I would get a 2nd opinion before any surgery. Even if you have to go to a 2nd state becuz everyone knows every dr. in your state & a dr. won't consider you, just agree easily w/ dr. #1 - if I could go back, I would go whereever before I was fused in my case T12 down to L5/S1. I won't waste time talking of myself anymore. But I will say my neice had 2 back surgeries before age 20 & in time they realized she had endometrios, which alerted me to the fact it is worse w/ menustration; she went to a new gyn dr. in a larger town and the female disease had grown to where it was pushing on her back the entire time. Not to take anything away from your severe scoliosis problems. My advice - be smart - don't allow only one dr. to convince you of surgery til you get a 2nd opinion. I wish you luck. From: Betts-DeShields <HayDeS@...> Subject: Re: Sacroiliac pain associated with scoliosis?
