Surgeons use titanium or stainless steel. You may have read in other notes over the past that titanium is 'brittle.' Well, first of all, let me say, they are lighter. , Sara, Lana (I feel like it's roll call - LOL) ... Another hardware material option exists besides stainless steel and titanium. My Stryker XIA system (placed 2/5/2008) is comprised of 6mm Vitallium rods and titanium pedicle screws. Vitallium is a proprietary cobalt, chromium, moly alloy. It's strong, it's light (the equivalent hardware I have in 316 SS would have weighed ±1 lb. ... mine weighs ±6 oz.). It's also MRI-able with no distortion.
