Guest guest
This article mentions 50 million persons of all ages in the US and 1 in 12 children disabled - from the last census. Question for anyone: With your CMT, do you consider yourself disabled, handicapped, physically challenged, or another term? Have your rights as a disabled/handicapped/physically challenged person ever been violated? If so, what did you do? ~ Gretchen
Guest guest
I consider myself handicapped but don't get concerned about semantics. I have had one problem with the city of Hazelwood, Missouri (part of the St. Louis metro area) regarding compliance with ADA. Within Hazelwood's juisdiction, is a strip mall where my beauty salon is located. When a Dollar General store located in the mall, parking spaces became a premium so the blue handicapped signs were removed and people parked wherever. I complained several times to the city and NOTHING has been done. The gentleman I talked to seemed irritated at my complaint. So it is evident that in this city they do not care about the ADA law. My only recourse at this time would be to sue and frankly it would be easier to change beauticians. Guest guest
: Actually, you are probably complaining to the wrong people. Generally, the city has little control over the busines property as long as they comply with city code - ie: building, parking space requirements. Most city zoning/planning code ordinances do not specifically address handicap accessibility. I would try talking to the owners of the strip mall. You can probably find out who the owner is thru your city clerk. If that doesn't work, consider going to your city's next planning commission meeting and address amending the zoning/code ordinance. I am the city clerk for a small city in Arkansas and this is the standard procedures here. I wouldn't think MO would be very much different. As a kid growing up with CMT I never knew I had rights. I probable didn't have rights back then. I just had tough luck. Now as a parent I want my children to know they have rights so they can try to live almost normal lives. That is what the ADA is about. jenny
