Guest guest
I was told that i couldn't have a MRI due to the Harrington Rod-HOWEVER-many people on this board has had them! Â From: donna <dsengplute@...> Subject: Has anyone had an MRI after having a Harrington Rod? Scoliosis Treatment Received: Thursday, February 3, 2011, 2:57 PM Â As if scoliosis wasn't enough I now have been diagnosed with breast cancer and am scheduled to get an MRI on both breasts Monday morning. Today's radiation techs say " no problem " , are they right? I have a call into Hahnemann Hospital to the partially retired doctor that did my surgery in 1974 to get his opinion but am worried I won't hear from him in time. Tried www.mrisafety.com but couldn't find any reassuring info there either. If you have been through this safely, please write and let me know. Guest guest
I have seen this topic appear before. It's contentious as in certain jurisdictions they do it routinely and in others they won't do it at all. I live in one that still has a policy of no older rods in their MRI machines. I think it is more policy than science. > > > From: donna <dsengplute@...> > Subject: Has anyone had an MRI after having a Harrington Rod? > Scoliosis Treatment > Received: Thursday, February 3, 2011, 2:57 PM > > > Â > > > > As if scoliosis wasn't enough I now have been diagnosed with breast cancer and am scheduled to get an MRI on both breasts Monday morning. Guest guest
You can have an MRI with spinal instrumentation; however, the image around the instrumentation will very likely be distorted. I've had MRI's of my spine, and the reports stated this fact. S. Has anyone had an MRI after having a Harrington Rod? Guest guest
I'm not sure if the rods were made of different types of metal during different time periods, and thus it might be safe for some and not for others. My surgery was done in 1992, and I have had several MRIs since then. There was never a question of safety, but the rods do cause " artifacts " in the images, meaning they aren't as clear as they would be if I didn't have the rods. But they have still been clear enough for them to use them to diagnose spinal problems in the segments below my fusion. Guest guest
I have had 2 at least, but after having my scoliosis surgery unfortunately I had nerve damage in my bottom. I was already paralyzed from something called TRANSVERSE MYELITIS, inwhich I was paralyzed from T12 down BUT LEFT IN NERVE PAIN; with burning feet, at times millions of needles at other times; or like shocking feeling one would think it would be like, and later stabbing knife pains and extremely deep spasms. BUT, the bottom nerve pain is so severe that even pushing onward with the Transverse Myelitis I went to Dallas for Rehab. but that awful surgeon left a once wheelchair person now 15 months later still bedridden fighting to get a spinal cord stimulator scheduled in 2 weeks to be fed thru my spinal area between all the bone that surgeon had put in me. He ruined my life even with me 3 years prior being in a wheelchair. I wish I had gone out of the surgery clinic I had been in to get a second opinion in another state or the largest University Medical Center in my state or had gone to Texas again for this surgery because I fight every day to live a better day. Yes, you can have an MRI but I think my rods are titanium. ________________________________ From: Izarah Star <izarahstar@...> Scoliosis Treatment Sent: Fri, February 4, 2011 9:07:09 AM Subject: Re: Has anyone had an MRI after having a Harrington Rod?  I was told that i couldn't have a MRI due to the Harrington Rod-HOWEVER-many people on this board has had them!  From: donna <dsengplute@...> Subject: Has anyone had an MRI after having a Harrington Rod? Guest guest
The only way to know for sure is to contact the technician that will be doing the test. They know where to go to find out what can be done with their machine. I have had two MRIs with a Harrington rod in...one at my hospital and another at a diagnostic clinic. I didn't have a problem either time. > > > > As if scoliosis wasn't enough I now have been diagnosed with breast > cancer and > > am scheduled to get an MRI on both breasts Monday morning. Guest guest
So it appears that if rods are stainless stell then MRI is not possible. But if they are titanium that is okay.
