Guest guest
Hi, I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was your age. I am now 63. I will tell you my experience so far. Pain started right away and has progressed over the last 11 years. The curve has progressed as well, but no surgery recommended, I think, because the curve is at 28 degrees. I would recommend: Find a good scoliosis surgeon and go and see him to monitor the progression. Do find some exercises to help with the pain. Swimming, walking, yoga. Physical therapy might help. Find a pain specialist who is willing to work with you on meds. I have tried many, including morphine, which did not help me. It does not seem to help nerve pain for me. I take tramadol and am now trying celebrex along with it. Try and try again. I use a tens machine much of the day. It does decrease the pain. Try not to overdue your physical activities during the day.  I do some tasks then, I have to pull if back for a while. Towards the evening, I must just rest. There may be some things that you can not do, but do not feel bad about it. Don't let others try and tell you that your pain is not real or not that bad. Family members do not like it when others are not what they were or can no longer do all the things that they did. I have found that attacking the problem on many levels is what helps. It has been a very long road for me. Currently I am trying to see if surgery is an option, as I don't want to be 75 and they tell me then that I need to do it. Be proactive. Hope this helps, and that you can get lots of different kinds of help along the way. Barb From: Judynowa <judynowa@...> Subject: New to the group Scoliosis Treatment Date: Monday, February 7, 2011, 9:06 PM  I just found out friday I have scoliosis of the spine. I knew I had osterposis I thought that way why i humped over. Plus I fell about 14 months ago and fractured my back. The fracture is healing but arthritis set in. I am in pain all the time. I can take the strongest pain meds I will hurt in about four hours. I don't know much about the disease. I am 51 does it get worse? Is there anything good for comfort? any suggestions about the disease would be appreciated. Judy
Guest guest
Hi Barb, First of all thanks for your recommendations. I found a good pain management doctor and start a series of injections. If these don't help then I will have to see a surgeon and have a neurostimulator implanted. As far as exercise, I can't do any right now because I hurt so bad. I'm looking forward and staying optimistic that these injections will help and then I will start my exercise program. I have some Pilates stuff and think that would be beneficial. I have also developed a list of websites this group may be interested in. I'll list them here for you. http://www.bonati.com/discussion/ http://www.scoliosis-assoc.org/ http://www.spinemd.com/about-us/ http://www.srs.org/ http://www.mypainspecialist.com/index.html http://www.spineuniverse.com/ http://www.brainandspine.org.uk/helpline/neurology_in_the_news/chronic_back.html http://www.scoliosis-support.org/ http://www.fixscoliosis.com/forum.php http://www.scoliosissystems.com/?gclid=CLfv_5z1l6YCFY9x5QodXUwFmw http://livingtwisted.wordpress.com/ http://www.scoliosis.org/forum/ http://www.scoliosisjournal.com/ http://www.liv.ac.uk/FacultyMedicine/ibse/ http://www.iscoliosis.com/ http://www.sdscoliosis.com/ Keep me informed of your progress.
