Guest guest
Dear all, Thanks Dr Smita for the invitation and Dr. Geer for a good start and drawing my attention. I have not opened the link yet , but let me start with the following: The objective of education is to change the behavior of the learner .The evaluation is an attempt to find out whether the behavior has been changed or not? Whether the methods adopted for imparting the education has been effective or not? My friends would agree with me that medical education and the profession in general has undergone a sea change. Many departments/ institutions have made changes in this direction to meet the needs. However, our evaluation system has remained the same!!! It is said that 'Whoever controls the examination controls the curriculum'. I would invite our members to share their experiences and views regarding the various evaluation methods followed at their institution and what other methods can be adopted in our set up. Happy posting... Mira desai From: Geer M. Guest guest
Dear Anupama, Happy education day to you as well! Can you explain the advantage of having grades instead of marks? The dual assessment system is infact helpful to both students and teachers.... The formative assessment ( internal evaluation) will give feedback to the teachers and students and help in monitoring the learning process. While summative is the most essential to determine pass/ fail and certify the course/ a year. Just imagine if you do not have internal examination( and marks) in your college, do you think the students will be interested in attending the classess ? Don't you think the behaviour of the students will change ? Mira Desai From: Geer M. Guest guest
Dear members, Evaluation is a systematic process that consists of finding out the extent to which educational objectives have been achieved by the students. Any evaluation process must thus be directly related to the educational objectives. However, evaluation of students is not easy if the criteria of objectivity, uniformity, validity, reliability and practicability have to be met. Evaluation and assessment are core components of effective teaching and learning, wherein students need to develop the relevant practical skills to achieve effective evaluation and assessment. Effective evaluation of teaching and learning is essential for quality control and meaningful assessment is a strong positive influence of learning. Students should be encouraged to develop techniques to obtain meaningful feedback from learners, tutors and other stakeholders and to understand the processes needed to ensure appropriate course development ensues. Guest guest
Dear Prof. Mira Madam and Dr. Anupama: Of late there have been widespread concerns regarding growing stress amongst school going kids due to cut throat competition and rat race amongst their parents for securing higher positions in exams. As a consequence of that experts have suggested replacing marks with grades, so that little angels do not get scolded and rebuked for securing 0.001% less than their counterparts in their schools. Several suicides cases too have come to fore as a fall out of such ruthless competitions. I am not too sure how advisable it shall be to implement grade system in higher education too. I am also awaiting more awareness on that count. With regards Dr. Geer M. Guest guest
Dear members, Qualitative approaches are used to help evaluate educational interventions. Four qualitative methods are particularly applicable for assessing educational interventions. First, participants’ responses to open-ended questions can be coded and analyzed using the methods of qualitative analysis. Second, focus groups bring a group of participants together to express views about a topic, allowing investigators to learn more about reactions of its members than might be learned with individual interviews. Third, individual interviews, ranging from very structured to open ended questions may be appropriate for eliciting perspectives when a focus group cannot be arranged or when participants represent different stakeholders and may not be comfortable talking in a group setting. Fourth, observational studies provide for viewing the naturalistic process and outcomes of a particular intervention. Overall, qualitative methods provide a rich repertoire of approaches for assessing the process and outcomes of interventions. Regards, Dr. Mangesh Download prohibited? No problem. Guest guest
Dear allA very enthusiastic beginning to an interesting topic. Conventionally our evaluation system has been very knowledge based and something that emphasizes and encourages rote learning. Skills are evaluated to a very small extent while affective domain goes nearly unevaluated. No wonder that the scores in exams do not in any way match the actual performance in clinical practice. Grades are a good way of overcoming this where you have a broader standards, more flexibility and they are more holistic in approach.Another issue of concern is ensuring uniformity and objectivity in the process of evaluation i.e. to develop a system that is unbiased, fair to all students/examinees and is not influenced by the moods, skills and perceptions of the examiners. A very difficult task indeed. Medicine is a very vast profession, requiring something more than mere knowledge....and an effective evalaution system needs to address all the aspects in toto.More on newer methods as the discussion proceeds and as Dr Mira guides the forum. Warm wishesChetna2008/11/11 mangesh bankar <drmangesh_bankar@...> Dear members, Qualitative approaches are used to help evaluate educational interventions. Guest guest
Dear Dr Geer, I agree with you regarding the stress caued by marking system in school children. In context to our discussion- medical education is unique as the learner is always an adult, and there are rapid changes in the knowledge . And the learner has to develop skills to become life long learner. and so the evaluation is mandatory. Every medical case the student comes across will be unique ....what we need to think whether our evaluation system is sufficient to assess these skill or not? Mira Desai From: Geer M. What better occasion to start a discussion on medical education than on "National Education Day", that is today. Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India has decided to observe 11th November, birthday of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first Union Minister of Education as the “National Education Day†every year. In this connection, attached herewith please find an article of mine on changing dynamics in higher education published today in a regional English Daily. Though the article does not deal with medical education in particular, it concerns higher education in general. Article presents a brief overview of the proceedings and recommendations of an expert level panel discussion organized by the Academic Staff College of the University of Kashmir in association with Indian Institute of> Public Administration, Kashmir Chapter at Srinagar on November 1st, 2008. Veteran academicians of the state including principals of several degree colleges and noted academicians of the Universities of Kashmir and Jammu participated in the panel discussion, of which I happened to function as the Rapporteur.
