Thanks Dr. Vijay sir, for your enriching remarks about the topic of current discussion.

Health is a personal responsibility. However, the responsibility of personal health has been handed over to the healthcare system. The belief is that doctors, pharmacists and other health care professionals are responsible for our health since they have been trained in that area. This belief results in dependency on health professionals and neglect one's personal responsibility of his or her own health.

It is essential that the general public have the skills and knowledge to make informed

decisions about when and how to use medicines, and to understand their potential risks

as well as benefits. Without such knowledge and skills, people will often not get the expected clinical outcomes and may suffer adverse effects.

Today, `p' stands for personalized for doctor assuming that doctor will take care of patient, but in future, as you said rightly, time will come, when `p' stands for patient.>> Hi,> I await the time when the "P" will stand for Patients.> When the patients will be empowered, when they will have the requisite > knowledge, information and enlightenment to wield the sanctions. When > those who suffer from the disease and spend for the treatment will > have the power to exercise the right to decide what they want. When > patients will take informed decision about their medicines.> Vijay>

Hi,

The belief of handing over the responsibility of the individual's

health to medical / pharma profession is a myth because it is not

carried by them in the same spirit. These are no sacro-sanct

practitioners anymore and have become commercialized like any other

profession. It is the only area where decisions about individual's

suffering are made by another person, who decides what the patient

should undergo, which medicines the patient should take. And all

this happens at the price which the patient pays.

What clinical outcome is expected at the hands of

irrationalist,indifferent, incompetent, incapable, inefficient

professionals? With the falling standard of medical / pharma

education, to give them the status of decision makers is absolutely

out of place. There may be few ethical, worthy practitioners but the

majority is not worthy.

The patient empowerment is at low ebb because the medical and

pharmaceutical profession does not wish that their payers (the

patients) should get the power of decision making and practice the

right of holding sanctions. The " P " must stand for " Patients " and

why not ? Those who pay should be the masters and not slaves.

Dear ALL

It is not only the question of ‘p’ drug, but all the aspect of healthcare delivery system and medical education which lack accountability. Also we do not

have the Periodic Re-licensing examination fotr the Doctors to add to the misery of our patients. I do not remember to have learnt the concept of ‘p’ drug during my formal

education or afterwards. I believe we need to change our education drastically, reinforce periodic re-licensing certification (honestly carried out one!) for the Practioners as well as Teachers and equally strict punishment for the offenders. Till then may GOD help our patients (even if our own relative or ourselves happen to fall in the category!).

Unless we educate our patients adequately, giving them the rights to choose or even participate in decision making do not yield any better results. Awaiting more learned responses, thanks.
