Are you sure you shoud be asking those questions these lists are available

Thanks for your reply - I sometimes feel that we are piggy in the

middle between two sets of medical people here! Lawries has been

fully certified as fit to swallow by the speech therapists he has

seen ! Has had various videofluroscopy thingies and all say his

swallow is fine. What I think is that he had LEARN'T to deal with the

Achalasia pre stroke and now has to relearn along with a lot of other

stuff (like what day of the week it is !).

We are having to be a bit sneeky and he started having a cup of

water when cleaning his teeth as long as no nurses are present ! He

is now able to come home for one day a week so we had one cup of

coffee last time and so far no ill effects.

I just wish that we or I had at least known so much more before the

stroke and maybe dealt with it. Also I read people on here who are

also dealing with it and not getting it treated - Just imagine if

overnight you ended up flat on your back/unable to

communicate/couldn't jump up at night to cough up or whatever -

PLEASE at least make sure someone else close to you knows what is

going on with you.

Hi Connie, I did the tape until I got the breath down good. Now I put one

or the other in periodically just to make sure I'm still doing it properly.

Most of the time I do them on my own or with the commuter computer tape. I

have several different tapes and it is fun to just switch them out

occasionally.

Good luck

Welcome to the group. I am so glad you have joined!

This is a great place to get support, suggestions, and information.

I can understand your concerns about the medications and the side affects. I

guess you have to decide if the risk or suffering the side affect is worth

the medication. For Adrienne it is.

But too... different medicines affect different people in different ways.

Some medications that caused Adrienne to throw up every single day, work very

well for others with out that affect. And other medications ADrienne takes...

do little or nothing for others.

It took a while, and Adrienne tried many different medications before finding

what works well for her.

I would encourage you, if you need help with the pain and discomfort, to try

different medications as needed and see if there is something that works well

for you.

Something else Adrienne did that helped when she was in the midst of a flare,

and she still does when she is feeling poorly is... her diet. She goes onto

an anti inflamitory diet. For some, that may be all that is needed. For

others... there is much more needed.

In brief, Adrienne cuts out red meat, wheat, dairy, tomotoes, potatoes, any

plants in the night shade family she avoids. It makes for interesting

cooking... but the diet does help her when she needs it.

For finding a good doctor, I would suggest doing a search for doctors that

are members of ACHE. It is american counsel for headache education... I

think... We found her neurologist from that group and she is a Most wonderful

doctor.

Perhaps there is a doctor in your area that is a member that could be of

help to you. The doctors who specialize in headache treatment are familiar with

pain and pain management.

Good luck! I hope you can find what you need to feel your best.

> what should i do...should i take nsaid , cox ii with

antacids...or

First of all , welcome..you've come to a good place....As to your

question.

I don't mean to be flip,Zen, but one of first things you should do is

to find a good doctor (rheumatologist or internist) and let them make

initial decisions about your medicines or any changes.this disease

can be pretty

rough sometimes and you really need a good physician to guide you...I

know that one of the best research-oriented rheumatologists is head

of phila VA rheumatology dept and also is affiliated with University

of Pennsylvania Medical Center..The Medical Center is excellent and

has a first class Rheumatology Dept..I'd take a trip over there and

talk to some personnel about finding a good rheumatologist..this

Group (RISG) participated in a small research project being conducted

by

Univ of Penn Medical School about 2 yrs ago..if you would like, i'd

be glad to give you name of rheumatologist who is very well

known,off-line. Most likely he won't be able to take you personally

but sure

could refer you..

Also take a look at Amer College of Rheumatology list of board

certified rheumy's in phila..

i just spent a few minutes at website and Phila has more rheumys than

i ever thought..most are affiliated with the many teaching centers..

Here's the address for all board certified rheumatologists in

Phila..at

least it's a start..hope it helps..you will probably have to copy and

paste to your browser.

http://www.rheumatology.org/directory/city.asp?

hCountry=USA & city=Philadelphia & cbxPediatric= & cbxPatientCare=Yes & state=

PA

(I just tried and it works fine, straight to phila rheum's)

Zen,

If you have acid reflux disease, have you tried Prilosec? I was taking

Zantac which isn't working as well anymore, so I'm going to start taking

Prilosec.

It sounds like you have a classic case of reactive arthritis or anklyosing

spondylitis. Have you had a diagnosis? People with our type of arthritis

are at increased risk for inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn's

Disease. This can be definitively diagnosed with a colonoscopy. Have you

had a colonoscopy?

It sounds like you need a good rheumatologist and gastroenterologist. What

type of insurance coverage do you have? Are you in Philly itself or one of

the surrounding townships? I haven't looked to see yet what other replies

you got. I'll check and see what I can find on docs. in the Philly area.

It's one of the best areas in the country for docs. My sister lives there.

The only problem she has is she has a crappy HMO and sometimes can't access

the cornucopia of top-notch docs. you have there.

God Bless,

Hi Petra,

Welcome to the group. There is tons of great info. here

I'm Debbie mom to 2 sets of identical twins. They are 3 1/2 years and 18 months

none of them have ever received a vaccination. I can't really help with the

questions your asking due to the fact mine haven't had any shots but i'm sure

some of the other members can.

why, that one just did NOT make sense to me at all. Now my question is, is

there any harm in interupting his schedule of vaccines at this point? Now that

I have become more aware of the vaccine issue, I feel ever more that it is not

right. I might still allow a few, like polio, but I would like to learn more

about this before my baby is going in for his 2 year old checkup in september.

I am grateful for any info, and all the best to all you caring moms and dads.

My son had seizures from his vaxes, so we stopped his after his 18

months ones. ANd my daughter has not gotten any and wont as long as I

have a say about it. I personally would recommend doing research

before letting them shoot any more vaxes into him. They have

htem 'catch up " all the time. In your research, make sure you look at

things like the manufacterers inserts, the CDC disease rolodex that

tells you how many cases of the diseases happen each year in the US

(if you are out of the US, look at the WOrld health organization's

website)and I'd recommend reacing DrMendelsohn's How to raise a

healthy child in spite of your doctor. In that one, he talks about

the diseases that they vax for, and gives a really good overview

about each one. As well as telling you what you can do about them,

and when it's time, in his opinion to go to the doctor.

Good luck in your research, and like I said, I'd encourage you to do

some research before you do any more vaxing. I haven't read anything

about any ill effects of stopping vaxes in the middle, and the only

side effects I saw from stopping were that my son didn't have any

more seizures. Once you have the facts, from all sides of the issue,

it's a tough one. You are the only one that can decide the right way

to go for your family. But both ways, vaxing and not, have risks.

It's a lot easier when you are just hearing the docs side of it. But

then it's not an informed choice. ANd an uniformed choice, isn't

really a choice at all.

My is 19 ½ months.

It is tough to have kids with this disorder. It

really does suck. I will write more later since it is late here.

Hi

Hi

How old is your , I have a 25 month old little girl named

. She is the light of my life, but I hate having this

disease and her seeing me sick. She has started putting her finger

down her throat when she eats, like Mommy does. It just breaks my

heart. My husband also is quite understanding. He even knows

when

I am having difficulty getting food down, without me saying

anything. What a blessing he is. I am looking at surgery at the

end of the year. For the new member, forgive me for not getting

your name, who is 4 hours from Houston, how far are you from

Dallas? There is a great group of surgeons here that have done 100+

surgeries at Baylor Dallas. I could get you there name and number

if you would like. I was extreamly impressed with their office.

They even had achalasia listed on the pink sheet you leave the

office with (CPT code). Many patients from the area are funneled

into his office and he was quite up to date on the latest practices

around the world for achalasia.

Fubugirl. Start off hard BUT with basics. WATER, PORTIONS, and Exercise. Sounds like you are going to busy which will help. And start a journal.

Hi,

I guess my best suggestion is to eat sensibly, healthy foods verses

junk foods, if you know you are going to have time to eat lunch while

waiting around for the bus. Pack some healthy veggies and a sandwich

and a bottle of water.

Take some of your free time to walk, or maybe get off the bus a stop

early and walk the extra distance to the next stop, that'll help use

up some of that time as well.

Hope that helps some!

I think it will be really helpful for you to make sure you have healthy

portable food with you. The night before classes pack a ziplock bag with

baby carrots or carrot sticks. Also pack an apple or two. Pack a sandwich

with some sort of meat and lettuce on it. Do it the night before because

you won't have time in the morning.

Then, make sure to eat breakfast. Not a granola bar. Have cold cereal with

a banana, hot cereal or eggs and toast.

This will protect you from vending machines or fast food between classes.

Let us know.
