Guest guest
> Hi everyone. well its snowing here its actually bad here. I'm a Weather Channel nut and see these storms all around the past week. I *really* for sorry for those in New Hampshire (Hey ? You still here?), because some areas there got over 4 feet of snow. Yes, FEET! I stayed > home from school today because of the snow and I didn't want to be I don't blame you! Last Friday my son's college closed, but not until 6 pm. By that time, many of the busses and none of the shuttles were running. He's lucky he got home when he did. We had to pick him up last night after his late class, and the campus is barely plowed! Today's the last day of class for the semester, and we were watching a lot of kids moving out of their dorm rooms already last night, every one getting the little trolley stuck in the too-narrow paths and snowbanks. >I may of missed alot but its better to be Hopefully it's all reviews for finals and you studied so well throughout the semester that missing this one day's class won't matter. >Today I wrapped about 5 of my Christmas presents. None of the presents here are wrapped yet. We'll wait to do them all at one time, probably some day when the kid is over a friend's house or out with the gang to NYC when we know he'll be gone for a few hours. Enjoy the day off, and don't hurt yourself shoveling out tomorrow. Sue in NJ

Anyway, I submitted my case to the VA through the local VA clinic May 03 at AFB. I received the response yesterday denying my case telling me that it wasn't chronic and that I have recovered. I've read your e-mails in response to VA cases and I am asking is it worth appealing their decision. They say that there is no permanent or residual disability and called it a transitory condition. I am now having some problems with Comp over some pain medication. I did not get Flat Back from Scoliosis but from an A/P fusion with bone grafts & Harrington Rods that was done in 85. Altogether I have had 4 laminectomies & one A/P fusion & one Posterior Fusion. I developed Adhesive Arachnoditis from my 1st 2 myelograms ( I so far have had 8 ) that were done with oil based Pantopaque. This dye was banned in Sweden in 47 for causing this condition. The FDA allowed it to be made in the USA until 88 & let then use what was left on the shelf....I have heard of a Pantopaque Myelogram done in 92....this is just unbelievable. When I had the myelograms noone gave me " Informed Consent " ....Informed Consent means telling a patient all the good & THE BAD about having this procedure done with the particular dye they are using. I was diagnosed with Adhesive Arach in 1988, this is a very painful condition that there is no cure for, and only palliative treatment to help you deal with the never ending pain. Then at the end of 99 I started walking all bent over & found out that I now also had Flat Back Syndrome & was advised by 2 Revision Specalist that my only hope of being kept out of a wheelchair was Revision Surgery. It is funny but when the bending over started, I did everything I could to avoid having this surgery & now I wish it was tomorrow. I am also having a problem with Comp as I have been on MS since 98 for the intractable pain I was having. There have been flare ups when even the MS did not help & I would wind up going to the Er for a shot. Finally my Dr decided to give me Actiq ( which is Fentanyl in Lollipop Form ) for breakthrough pain & this has kept me out of the ER. Now today I recieved a letter from Comp about having a Utilization Review about my need for the Actiq. The reason they do not want to give them to me is because an RX for 90 Lollipops, 1,600micrograms each, cost them $2,500. It is a shame we live in a country that does not provide equal Medical, and Prescription Care for all of its citizens. It really makes me very angry to be leaned on by Comp for things I really need, because getting hurt at work stole my career that I worked so hard for & for so many yrs to get. When I got hurt I was only making $8.32 an hour and on comp you get 2/3rds of that with no cost of living raise ever. Guest guest
Thanks for the relpy and welcome. I have concidered the alst course but I've been adviced by the guys I did= the dive medic course with that it hard to get work with that alone. To get onto the offshore medic course you now have to be a registered nurse= with 2 years experience, a doctor, or a military medic CMT1 or better with = 6 years experience. Or so the trainers have told me. The HSE said that it was= upto the trainer who gets trained and the employer after that. That and the= £2000 + accom and food is a small problem. Guest guest
If you are looking for a sweetener to use have you tried or considered using vegetable glycerin? It is considered OK for all types. Heidi really recommends it in her column. I use it and think it is great in tea. In fact, I have a cup of green tea in front of me now that has some vegetable glycerin in it. I have also cooked with it some. Don > Hi everyone, I'm new to this group and trying to figure it all out. Can someone help me with this little problem? Guest guest
I guess I'm not the only one who learns things the hard way. I have to try an avoid so many times before I finally give up my denial and believe that I should truly be avoiding that avoid. Stubborn O's. But welcome, I find this group is invaluable. > I guess I shuold introduce myself since I am reading and contributing here and there. My name is Kate McDonough and I am a chiropractor on the south shore of boston. About 20 years ago it was recommended to me that I abstain from all sugars, grains and dairy. i felt so miserable at the time that I was willing to do anything. Well, it made a huge diffrence in my life. Emotionally was the really big ticket for me, phsyically I didn't feel that bad. I stayed with that eating plan religiously for five years then began to add grains back into my diet. I had lost sight of how bad I felt when I ate them. I immediately began to backslide once I started with the grains but I stayed in denile. I stayed off the sugar for another 10 years but after a particularly trying emotional time I started again with the sugar. Within two months I was having an invasive carcinoma treated surgically. Even though in my mind I made a direct conection to the way i was eating and the development of the cancer I remained in denial for many years. Just recently and with the help of this board and Dr. Dadamo I am coming out of my denial. In my gut I know this way of eating is right for me. It has been a struggle to get here and many emotional issues had to be faced and dealt with before I had the resolve to once again jump out of the mainstream and do what is right for ME! So that is me! Glad to meet you all! > > >
Guest guest
Dear Elspeth, While major spinal surgery is no walk in the park, there have been major improvements since I had my Harrington Rod put in 1973. The pain control is much better, the braces are better, and we get physical therapy now which I never had following the first surgery. In December of 2000 I had my rod removed and decompression surgery for steniosis. That didn't end the pain so it was onto plan " B " fusion to the sacrum. That was a surgery where they get at the spine from the front and the back, twelve hours total. I was great folloing the surgery, no more awful hip and leg pain, but there was the drawback of no longer being able to bend. Then about 6 months later the old fusion above the last surgery cracked and it was onto plan " C " since I was falling over to the right to the point where my ribs were resting on my right hip. They then fused me all the way up to T-1 and of course I was still fused down to the sacrum. I now have the majority of my spine fused, have two big rods and a small one, twenty some odd screws, and two bolts. While I have had to adjust to my new unbendable body I am no longer in pain. I walk every day, and at this moment I'm painting rooms getting ready to move aat the end of the month. I'm greatful to an excellent surgeon Dr. Anant Kumar, and for another surgeon who assisted on my case, Dr. O brien. Dr. O brien is now in Florida, Miami Children's Hospital if you are looking for a great surgeon. I hope your friend can find some peace in the surgery process, finding the right doctor for her is key, and her being ready too. I know I didn't know how I was going to go on pre-revision but I gave doctors one more shot to get me well enough to live my life, and I'm glad I did. Denver Hi > Hi , > Thanks for the reply. Guest guest
I am sorry to hear that you are a fellow RSD sufferer and like me at such a young age. I am 23. All the information I was ever told was that the hospital stay depends on the doctor and / or which version of the stimulator you are having done. Some doctors want you to stay overnight and some doctors don't think its needed. If you are having the stimulator put in that requires a laminectomy you are pretty much guaranteed a 24 hours stay in the hospital. It's the same way for the trial. Some doctors do the trial same day and some doctors have you stay overnight and some doctors have you stay in the hospital for the entire thing. The best thing is for you to talk to your doctor. There isn't a right or wrong answer as to if you should be awake or asleep for the installation of the battery pack and the wires. It is once again your doctors preference, the anesthesiologist's preference or the decision is based on your specific case. Some doctors will put you to sleep in the beginning and make all the incisions and then wake you up when then get the lead in position to make sure its in the right spot and then put you back to sleep so they can put the battery pack in while others will put the battery pack in using a local so they don't have to put you back to sleep. If they put it in using a local you don't feel any pain. You may feel some pressure when they are tunneling the wire. The anesthesiologist has also given you stuff so you are nice and relaxed. I have talked to quite a few people who have had this surgery and some stayed overnight and were awake while others weren't. But it didn't effect the outcome. Your best bet is to talk to your doctor. I hope everything goes ok. Let me know if you have any more questions about the surgery. Guest guest
Hi , I have had 3 different stimulators put in by 3 different docs in 3 different hospitals...and all experiences were...DIFFERENT! The first in 1998 - trial done with overnight stay and then returned to hospital 5 days later for removal of trial unit. Permanent implant was a 2 night stay. Second implant (more like a radical adjustment of first implant) - sent me home right afterward - but I had to return as an inpatient for 2 night stay because my diabetes insipidus went out of control. Third implant (with laminectomy) - trial on Monday - was inpatient until permanent implant on Friday and then 3 day stay for post-op healing and diabetes insipidus monitoring. Hope this helps with your questions.
