Dear All,

We are very likely to be looking for someone to work on promoting

rational use of medicines for 6 months in 2009, based in Geneva. If

you know of anybody, please could you ask them to forward me their

CV by email. If you are interested yourself, please could you

forward me your CV by email. I attach draft terms of reference. At

present we only have funds to support 6 months but we hope to secure

more funds for a longer term position (although there is no

guarantee of this).

TERMS OF REFERENCE

6-month short term appointment (Grade P4) in the Department

Essential Medicines and Pharmaceutical Policies (EMP)

Duties and responsibilities

(1) Assist in the planning and coordination of activities in EMP

related to the field of rational use of medicines by prescribers and

consumers. This would include:

• Liaison with other departments and outside partners as

necessary;

• Preparation of technical briefings as and when required

• Provision of technical support to countries and regions as

requested

• Update of the websites on rational use of medicines and

antimicrobial resistance

(2) Assist in the planning and coordination of activities in EMP

related to the field of containing antimicrobial resistance by

promoting rational use of antibiotics

(3) Maintain the drug use database which would involve searching

for relevant published and unpublished articles, retrieving them,

extracting data from them and entering it into the database

(4) Assist in the development and pilot testing of an instrument

to undertake a country situational analysis with regard to aspects

of the pharmaceutical sector and health system that impact on

rational use of medicines and antimicrobial resistance

(5) Assist in the setting up of an international steering

committee to guide implementation of WHA60.16 and WHA58.27 and

provide the administration necessary to run the first meeting

(6) Participate in the development and implementation of

training courses in the rational use of medicines at all levels of

the health system in coordination with partners. This would include

teaching and preparation of materials

(7) Manage research projects to promote rational use of

medicines in collaboration with partners. This would include

provision of technical support and supervision throughout the

project cycles

Qualifications

Basic degree in medicine or pharmacy with post graduate degree in

public health or other related health discipline.

Work experience in developing countries and willingness to travel

Knowledge of microbiology, infectious diseases and epidemiology an

advantage

Computer literacy with ability to compile and analyse data and draft

reports in a precise manner

Excellent spoken and written English. Knowledge of French or another

official WHO language an advantage.
