Dear Dr. Bharat Gajjarji:

Please don't be disheartened from a comparatively lesser participation of Netrum members in your current topic. I think we have had a very healthy, short but crisp discussion on agricultural products as xenobiotics. If your previous discussion on Modern medicines in drinking water was a block buster, this one was still a hit, no need to express any regrets whatsoever sir. Tommorrow is the final day of this discussion. We can still utilize it in consolidating our discussion on the direct health impact of these products on human beings. No player can be expected to score a century in every match so is the case with netrum discussions. Please read all my comments in a lighter vein and not seriously.

With kind regards

Dear Dr. Geer,

Thank you for your consolating words.

No doubt, we have discussed the topic thouroughly. We have tried to

touch all the aspects. For this, I am thankful to all participants

particularly Dr. Anupama and you.

Today is the last day.

Let us discuss health hazards of agriculture (occupational hazards) and precautions to prevent/minimize the hazards. DR. Dear Dr. Bharat Gajjar:

My research area during my post-graduation has been genotoxicity/mutagenicity testing. I have worked on lead nitirate which is an environmental pollutant, apart from cyclophosphamide. It should also be noted that several commonly used pesticides are derivatives of N-methylcarbamic acid and could conceivably give rise to the corresponding N-nitrosocompounds by interaction with nitrous acid in the environment or in vivo. Nitroso compounds are known mutagens/carcinogens. Most of the pesticides and other such agricultural products like insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, fumigants, acaricides, seed sterilants, soil nematocides, growth inhibitors,

growth regulators, and chemosterilants etc have been tested for mutagenicity using in-vitro methods like Salmonella mutagenicity testing and in-vivo methods like mouse bone-marrow micronucleus and chromosome aberration tests have been found to be highly genotoxic which is a direct indicator of their implied carcinogenicity. Apart from the dangers of their acute and chronic poisoning, the possible mutagenic effects of such contaminations could threaten the genetic health of future generations. A number of these agents are used in considerable amounts in such forms as granular formulations, dusts, powders, sprays, foams, and aerosols, and hence man can be exposed to these agents via handling of these agents per se, re-entry into a treated area, through ecological distribution, or via consumption of toxicant residues in food. There are a lot of studies on mutagenicity testing of pesticides and other agricultural products mentioned above. Thus they pose a direct occupational hazard to our farmer community who are thereby exposed to a number of hereditary and degenerative disorders like atherosclerosis, cancer etc.
