This diversity is decisive for disease pathogenesis, for individual susceptibility of diseases (medical genomics), as well as for the individual variability in response to biologically active substances (Pharmacogenomics). After the completion of the reference sequence of the human genome, the knowledge of human genomic variability is expected to allow a novel approach to disease prevention and to individualized drug treatment. Genotype profiles of individual patients may ultimately permit to identify patients who are at higher risk for

specific diseases – a knowledge which may then be used to target specific interventions for disease prevention. Today, there are first examples of individual Pharmacogenomics genotype profiles (currently restricted to few genes) which can be utilized to deliver more efficient and safer drug treatment by selecting the individually optimal drug in the individually optimal dosage according to the patient’s genetic make-up.
