Guest guest
Hey Lois, Sorry J. is having trouble with Risperdal too. Our doctor appointment was today...after waiting a month to get in but it looks as if we aren't going to make it. Haven't been to bed yet and it's 7:24 a.m. as had 3 meltdowns during the night. We live on an island off the coast of Seattle and we have to take a ferry to the mainland so going to the doctor is not a simple thing and it takes most of the day. We were deserted by our last med. manager. After we had the issues with Risperdal and stopped taking it, he tried Intuniv..a long acting version of Tenex, which did not work and then he had not other ideas for us...so we have been without any meds while waiting for our appointment today. I hope to have a phone consult in lieu of not being able to physically be there so we could possibly try something to get him more stable as we are pretty much house bound due to behaviors currently. He tried most of the usual meds in the beginning ( this mainly hit when puberty happened) but perhaps six years later what didn't work then will help now. He was only taking 1mg twice a day of Riserpdal over much of the 2.5 years he was on it and only the last six or so months did we notice the increase in aggression. When I decreased it to .50/then .25 the aggression towards us and the house decreased but then he turned on himself. We tried higher doses in the beginning and that was not good. I'm exhausted..the doctor's office opens at 8:00..I'm so disappointed. It was a long month just waiting to get into this dr. but it is too dicey to try and travel with him on a day like he is having. Hope I can make sense over the phone... From: lois noland <jlois@...>autism Sent: Tue, March 30, 2010 7:06:17 PMSubject: ? , Did you take your son to another Dr. yet? Guest guest
Thanks Pat. I did speak with him and he, after waiting 30 days to see him, said he probably wasn't the best one to see as his practice is not set up to see patients as often as it seems that will need..so we move on to another suggested dr. Sometimes I think Drs do not want to deal with complicated cases..they want the easy fix. Where is Dr. House when you need him??? Guest guest
Lana, We tried Zyprexa many years ago (2003) when this all first started..also Clonidine. The Zyprexa was 2.5mg for a week and then 2.5 twice a day and by the middle of the second week he started laughing..like all the time..was sensitive to any touch and also taken with his reflection in anything...toaster, windows, faucets..anything that would reflect, he would stop and stare and laugh until I moved him along. He also started talking to his finger (only index) or other objects. All of the above things stopped when we stopped the med. The Clonidine was mixed in with other meds at the time he took it so I don't have an idea of what wierdness it caused but we discontinued it when we started with a new dr. I do remember it didn't help with sleep much. He also tried the other "newer" antipsychotic Seroquel but after a few doses..he took all his clothes off and would not wear any for days. I could keep underwear on him for a while but not for long. Luckily we live in the sticks and all neighbors are surrounded by trees so having a half/mostly naked 14 year old running around in the house was only slightly distrubing to me and the dogs. Did not know if it was related or not to the drug but once again when we stopped the med, the clothes stayed on. I would almost try Seroquel again as it has the lowest risk of any movement disorders and he started to show a little facial/mouth twitching with the Risperdal before we stopped it. Perhaps it was a heat or clothing intolerance/touch and he was on Tegretol at the time so maybe they just didn't mesh in his body correctly...who knows....He has had some of the strangest side-effects to drugs that most of the docs (except our PCP) think I am making them up..they don't say so directly..just a. "hmmmm..really?" Anyone have luck with Seroquel? Has anyone tried Clozapine? Apparently it was initially rejected as an antipsychotic because of its seemingly reduced dopamine impact. There may have been other safety concerns..can't remember. With only two hours of sleep yesterday..he slept thru the night and today is better. Thanks for all the support and thoughts. Guest guest
Mitzi, That is where we are now..no meds and it is difficult. He isn't talking and he is usually very verbal, he doesn't eat well, pretty disconnected and sleep is an issue. I have a helmet on him (soft kick boxing helmet) to help with any head banging and he actually likes wearing it as it provides some sensory input/pressure. I did speak with one of the docs today that I called and he has experience with pdd-nos/brain damage patients but is going on vacation next week and so it would be two weeks before we could get in. He has in the past done okay without meds for short periods of time but this time is different. He is also very smelly...like a gym. Hormones pouring out. Spring is not his best time of year on a consistent basis...odd but apparently he is not the only one who has seasonal issues. One girl in his class had issues with the fall season. Guest guest
, Your son is a lot like JJ! Hormones everywhere! I am only giving J 2.5mg of resperdal in the morning but all day thru-out the day J will come up and "slap" me on the leg. I yell at him and he will stop but then will do it again thru-out the day. J loves to look at himself in the mirror too! I want to stop the resperdal BUT I know when he went off of the zprexa....(Slowley) into the second week off he got mean! Its kinda darn if you do and darn if you don't with the meds. Lois Re: ?
Guest guest
Hi , if it offers any encouragement, we were where you are at 3 yrs ago. We took my son off meds for many reasons, some of which are similar with yours. We did all the therapies which had shown positive results with behavior and coping issues for the past 2 1/ 2 years. We also do cognitive behavior therapy at home. This approach has helped maximize my kids potential and helped them catch upon age appropriate milestones. From experience, I can say with conviction that meds are not the only solution which is not usually offered to us outright. We have two route choices:1) Long/Slow Route = in form of therapies (occupational, behavioral, speech, social integration and psychotherapy). This offers life and coping skills our kids will find useful all throughout their lives.Autistic kids have unique genetic makeups. Most cannot absorb nutrients or produce amino acids the body needs to physically and mentally function and develop properly. We need to have our kids screened by the doctor for deficiencies to know what supplements they need. From my research and experience , these approaches are the safest and these have more success stories. This is also the closest we can get to healing.2) Short/Fast Route = in form of Psych/SSRI Meds that masks symptoms for a while, develops addiction and adverse side effects. Long term use has also shown high risk factor of psychosis and major organ damage in young autistic adults subjected to its use at a very early age.A lot of studies and info are available online should you want to research it further .We have choices. I hope you find the one that will best suit your child. Goodluck and God bless. From: lois noland <jlois@...>Subject: Re: ?autism Date: Friday, April 2, 2010, 10:13 AM , Your son is a lot like JJ! We see the other new dr. in a few weeks..he is on vacation next week. Per his info on the web and after speaking to him, he may finally be "the one"..but who knows. Dr. Kwon in Bellevue Wa seems to have a lot of experience with SIB behaviors, autism and everything associated with it. Funny, (not really) but we have about the same wake-up schedule..usually 3:00-3:30 am and if he is not able to return to sleep soon afterwards we go downstairs, so he can fall asleep on the couch. Since he is not speaking much now without the Risperdal..I started him back on a tiny dose to see what would happen and after about 3 hours he perked back up and was less agitated..and I mean tiny .06 of a mg. Also Ibuprofen seems to elevate his mood which may mean he may have some pain which he doesn't even realize. He broke his collar bone once and hardly complained except for the fact he couldn't raise his glass up enought to drink out of. ER doc after moving the shoulder around said he wasn't broken but I requested an x-ray and it was. Having a good day today and hope everyone else is too.. It used to take us 5 hours to put our son to sleep so we put him on Clonidine which helped pretty much. He does wake up early around 2-3 but falls asleep on the couch. He also takes Risperidol. I think whatever works is great. Hang in there. Lana From: sandra Wigglesworth <wigglesworthsandra>AutismBehaviorProbl emsgroups (DOT) comSent: Thu, April 1, 2010 2:50:41 PMSubject: Re: ? Perhaps it was a heat or clothing intolerance/ touch and he was on Tegretol at the time so maybe they just didn't mesh in his body correctly... who knows....He has had some of the strangest side-effects to drugs that most of the docs (except our PCP) think I am making them up..they don't say so directly..just a. "hmmmm..really? " Anyone have luck with Seroquel? Has anyone tried Clozapine? Apparently it was initially rejected as an antipsychotic because of its seemingly reduced dopamine impact. There may have been other safety concerns..can' t remember. With only two hours of sleep yesterday..he slept thru the night and today is better. Thanks for all the support and thoughts. From: lois noland <jlois@...>AutismBehaviorProbl emsgroups (DOT) comSent: Tue, March 30, 2010 7:06:17 PMSubject: ? , Did you take your son to another Dr. yet? Guest guest
Not sure that I've ever read it anywhere, but I believe it! It took me about 9 months of daily research to deprogram my inculcation. Then another year before I felt emboldened by the truth. I still beat myself up sometimes, deferring my child's health to someone else. That's why I'm convinced that the majority of doctors, esp. pediatricians, will NEVER accept the possibility. Their entire life's work is based on it. How could anyone ever live with that burden of guilt? Denial is a self-defense mechanism.Vaccinations From: liverbaileys@...Date: Mon, 28 May 2012 04:20:22 +0000Subject: Re: ? I meant to add that I was reading here on this site..... > > I just started reading something where someone was talking about how parents can't accept the thought of damaging their own children through vaccinating...........but then I lost my connection. Now I can't find that thread. Does this sound familiar to anyone? > > Thanks >
