Maybe even from some non-religious people. The is a very special group. We are not just Americans, we are not just Christians, we are not just old or middle-aged. We are people who truly understand the mechanics of getting a second chance at life. And because we all understand that unique experience, we are very close to one another in ways that are not at all traditional. When one of us is hurting, all of us can feel it, can understand what you feel, and in that we we are all the same person in different bodies, in different places all at the same time. We are with you much more than in spirit, Stacie. We are with you as if we were you. And in reality we all are. I once wrote my oldest son that it is unwise to think that you have wisdom. That was written before you were born, and I have since come to realize that it is very important for all of us to realize that we have varying degrees of wisdom and wisdom in many different areas of life. And you, Stacie, are no exception, for you, too, are possesed of wisdom in spite of your only eighteen years on this planet. Wisdom is not intellect or smarts. Being smart does not make you wise. everyone knows the " brain " who hasn't got a lick of common sense. No wisdom. Knowledge is not wisdom either. And almost anyone can read something or learn facts or skills without ever acquiring wisdom. Wisdom is the judgment that comes from life's experiences, the ability to use those smarts and those facts and skills to understand what goes on in life and inside people and to act accordingly and appropriately. And you, Stacie, are wise beyond your years. Consider all the things about life that you have learned because of the lemons of life that you have been given in the way of health problems. Then consider all the things that you know to be important that others, regardless of their age, have not yet learned. That is wisdom. Consider all the things that you have decided to do because they are important and how you have accomplished them through your own determination. and consider the ways that so many people fritter away their own lives without accomplishing anything. That is wisdom Consider the things that you consider important enough to share with others, to communicate to groups, to pass on to those still ignorant of those things and their importance. That, too, is wisdom. It is that wisdom that has carried you through eighteen years, and we all pray for another sixty or seventy more. It is that wisdom that has provided you with a life when others might have quit, as many other most certainly have. It is that wisdom that has made you an equal amongst a group of old folks who learn from you the things that you have learned and we need to know. it is that wisdom that you have at eighteen that we all wish we had when we were that young. And it is that wisdom, your own wisdom that will see you through life always. It is your strength, your toughness, your indominatable self that we all admire, and in some cases--me, for example--envy. My prayers for your safe and successful stay at the hospital are with you, and I look forward to seeing many new numbers following " Stacie, Thornburgh " on your e-mails. Bill Mahan PS: Any eighteen year old who can tolerate my bad jokes as you have is much tougher than any surgery known to man. You just spit in the Devil's eye, and I'll be making more bad jokes before you know it.
