Hi Ian and all,

It's still the best method for comms. It has really alot of

advantages like communicating personally with your boss via webcam,

exchanging pics while communicating with a doc or a medical advisor

and as u said cheaper. Ten times better than 'callserve'. I will

advise anyone to use it in our field. Stay well and be safe.

Kind regards

Hi Ian,

I did try it for a short while but because of the limited bandwidth we have

on board it was taken off.

Hope this helps,

Tony

Thanks Tony,

Thats odd though, our company installed it deliberately on all work PC's to

try and phone cut call costs... I was told it uses very little bandwith....

I do however confess I don't understand the techno babble behind.... but I

do understand free calls ! :-)

Thanks again

Hello Ian,

Everyone in our office uses Skype and have been doing for 12 months or so with

no problems. We encourage both clients and medics to contact us using it, as you

say it is free.

As I spend a large part of my time away from home, it is great for keeping in

touch with friends, workmates and family, especially when you use a webcam.

There are 8,071,137 people online with Skype as I write this mail.

I encourage all to check it out.

Best regards

Hello all

I am a remote medic in Iraq and necessity has caused me to be the IT guy for

the site. Skype is an excellent VOIP program, using Skype to Skype, Skype

out or Skype in. the available bandwidth in your system on a remote

satellite is highly compatible to the software. However you may wish to

check with your IT person before you use any video attachment to your voice

as it uses a constant stream of bandwidth. Voice bursts as you need it but

video locks in a constant drain. On our system web cam use will lock down

the system and no one else can use the system until you hang up. The key of

it all is available up link not so much the downlink availability. Most

affordable bandwidth packages are 1024 down and 512 up which usually means

the measurable availability is 50 down and 150 up to one user on a

multi-user system, at a particular time. You can test this at

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest to see what's available to you. If any

one wishes to get any more technical contact me off line.

There is the same facility on MSN live messenger, it is quicker than email and

you can have voice or video calls free of charge if both parties are on msn. I

used it in Iraq to UK and it was as clear as a normal telephone call.

Skype is a wonderful service within it's limitations, however there

are a number of things that everyone needs to be aware of:

(a) They don't support Satellite Providers. It probably will work,

but it may not work -correctly-. So if you've purchased an

'unlimited' account, or it's charged you too much for your calls, at

the end of the day they will tell you 'tough shit'.

(B) Their customer service is horrendous. Do an internet search on

" Skype customer service " or customer support. It is via email only,

the average response time takes two-three days each email exchange.

(So you ask for support, they email you three days later, you reply,

they email you three days later, you reply ....)

© They've double and triple charged people's credit cards, and from

what I can tell--do nothing to fix it.

If you're using it as a free service, for Skype-to-Skype calls, there

shouldn't be any problems, but once you start to pay for it, just be

aware that you're getting what you're paying for -- a cheap service

is cheap for a reason.

I used it flawlessly for over a year (unlimited in and out) and now

I'm on a job and they are billing me ~$0.25/min. Two weeks of

customer support later and I still haven't gotten one decent reply,

and they've ignored my emails for over a week. I realize that doesn't

sound like much to anyone not from the U.S., but we're in the land of

all-you-can-eat, and we aren't used to paying for any phone calls

within our borders.
