Norovirus outbreak at Sierra Tucson rehab clinic Posted: Jan 4, 2008 06:05 PM CST Fourty-five cases of norovirus between staff and patients is plaguing Sierra Tucson rehab clinic. State Epidemiologist Komatsu says 3 specimens that came from the facility came back positive for the stomach virus. Although the height of flu season is a month away, the outbreak at Sierra Tucson came well before February. Komatsu says the state health department was contacted on January 2, while the Pinal County Health Department was informed on New Year's Eve. The norovirus is very contagious, which is why the Pinal County Public Health

Department had Sierra Tucson beef-up its infection control practices. This includes more hand washing, keeping those infected with the virus away from others and voluntarily closing the clinic's kitchen. Although the norovirus itself is common, an outbreak like this, in a place like this, is not. Komatsu says in a facility like Sierra Tucson, you wouldn't expect to see this many cases. In a statement, Pinal County Public Health Director Tom Schryer says Sierra Tucson has controlled the outbreak and that the number of cases has dropped significantly since the outbreak began. This statement was also confirmed by Sierra Tucson's Executive Director Arnold, who says the transmission of the virus has been interrupted. http://www.kvoa.com/Global/story.asp?S=7580264 A journey is like marriage.
