Kristy,

Thanks for your concern. I guess so far the west coast is fairly

unaffected, although the 'net is sluggish today. I thought it was

from that new worm, but maybe it was the power outage. I just heard

about it a half hour ago.

It affects the northeast and part of Canada.

Kristy, the outage is in the North Eastern US and the part of Canada

that bordered that area. We are all too (well, mostly) far south and

west to be affected by the outage. Thanks for worrying, Australia. :)

  • 4 years later...

I'm a night owl so I sleep in late usually...I have a fan going in my room to keep the noise out so as not to wake me but 8:30am this morning the fan stopped blowing so I got up and the electricity was out.

This power outage gave me an opportunity to assess my situation if the bird flu or anything else were to hit...was I prepared? I thought I was...but not completely. I'm in Ohio where it is freezing cold right now so thank God we have wood/forest/fireplace so that is not a worry...but I realized my emergency radio that we had was taken by my sister since she broke it and gave me $$ to buy a new one...which I did not do yet...I was just looking at the red cross crank radio 2 days ago...so that is what I'll be doing today. I also realized we don't have back up for our pump in the basement...we never thought the basement could flood if the pump isn't going...so that is another thing we'll be getting today.

I washed clothe last night and forgot to put in dryer so I realized we don't have the rope set up in case we need to hang clothe in the basement during winter and one for outside for summer(unless I should worry about sick birds pooping on our clothe..hmmm...have to think about that one)

We could use more batteries but other than that we are pretty set so it was a good practice:O) Oh and I have to have my husband show me how to shut off the water the the pipes don't freeze if electric didn't come back on.

This has been on our mind too. In the last two days in Minnesota

we have had 20 below zero F. temps. When it is like this we

supplement our heat with a woodstove. We are going through our wood

so fast it will be gone soon.

It has made us resolved to stock up on far more wood next winter.

In the land of snow and 10,000 lakes, water would not be an issue

but an alternate source of heat would be.

I guess it is a good excercise to have some of those " test "

emergencies sometimes...
