Guest guest
In truth, only the saltiness. If you are truly yearning for chips, try exploring in the produce sections. Don't know your location, but even Northern markets with Latin customers are beginning to stock some of the " tropical " tubers. The best chips I have made are from a tuber called name (nah-may) sliced super, super thin and fried. Salt and garlic seasoning. Boniato and malanga are two other possibilities. Yuca makes great fries but tends to break into pieces easily sliced for chips. Betsy

Guest guest
Pam - thank you for your kind messages. I;m doing a little better. Its snowing snowing snowing and going below zero at night now. Am keeping my toes warmer and dressing for it. Don;t know why we people up here don't tend to want to do that. I hope you are feeling ok. I, unfortunately, don;t have time to sit down and just relax much with homeschooling my 2 girls and everything else going on. Wish I could sleep better. Guest guest
Thanks again Pam. I am wondering - what does having thyroid problems have to do with eating cold stuff? A couple of you mentioned that. Is that bad? I know I am crazy - but every morning for breakfast I eat ice cold fruit shakes or smoothies. Some mornings I get so cold I go take a very hot shower afterward. I love them though and don't like eating anything but fruit in the morning. Nothing like an ice cold fruit shake on an icy cold Alaskan morning!!! I got some special light bulbs today that mimic sunlight. Gonna sit under them every morning while we start school. Maybe it will help me get going and not get the winter blues. Jeanie > > > Hope you are feeling better too. Try a bit of hot herb tea before you go to > bed with a dollop of honey. Guest guest
Hypothyroid people are already cold. That's part of the problem. Low body temp and too slow metabolism. Cold foods cool the body down more. So do foods with a cooling energy as the herbalists would say, such as anything bitter, watermelon, grapefruit, cucumber. That's a whole other understanding...the list of foods commonly held to be cooling by the folks who watch that stuff. But for sure anything cold, out of the refrigerator, would be cooling to the cody temp. The other side of it is that the cooling/warming herbal medicine folks also say that you hsould consume something that is like the environment where you live. Thus if it is very hot, they have people eating heating spices (Mexican and Indian food). So maybe it's okay for you. Just sounds nuts to me. Guest guest
Aikya, You wrote:. " But for sure anything cold, out of the refrigerator, would be cooling to the cody [sic] temp. " Since cold liquids and food tend to lower the body temperature and the body compensates for this by raising its metabolism, it would seem that their body-temperature lowering effect would be only temporary. Guest guest
Well, some of us like me are desperately trying to develop more energy so we can have a life. We might choose not to give the body the extra work. Also I think that, after 50 (I am 55), this means a lot more. I notice that younger people consume iced drinks, ice cream, etc. without much problem. But older folks somehow figure out that the arthritis doesn't bother them as much, they're not as nervous, they're not up in the night to go potty as much, if they have something warm and avoid the cold stuff. I noticed it the other day walking past a construction site at break time. All the young guys had carbonated sodas. All the older guys had hot steaming cups of something or other. Pardon my typos. Guest guest
Interesting Aikya. Lately I have been hot a lot lately though. The cold shakes haven't even bothered me in the morning. Wonder what is up with that - menopause? I'm not even 40 - yet. Always was kind of " warm " blooded. My sister use to cuddle up to me at night when we were little. Get hot at night with all the covers. Maybe thats a good sign. My toes were freezing all day the other day but decided, since its below zero now, perhaps I should wear more than tennis shoes when outside. The heavy boots are hard to walk in but I heard Lobbins are really good so I am going to check that out. Its getting arctic up here now so I am adjusting to that. Have been taking my thyroid stuff again too. Also taking this stuff as a cleansing tool that is marketed as an inch loss product so maybe its revving my metabolism. Anyway - I still love cold shakes just cause they are so good and I like to just eat fruit before noon for cleansing reasons. Kind of a mini cleanse every day. I'm so use to it I don't get the weight loss benefits I use to though. You know I love to drink the frozen water (as it melts obviously) from leaving water bottles in the van. Nothing like ice cold water. I never thought about all this kind of stuff before. I actually ran hot for over a year one time when I was trying to withdraw off of Elavil. Ran a low grade temperature for a year!! That was weird. Developed a lot of problems from being on that - but it sure helped me sleep. Was supposed to help me deal with chronic pain. Still recommended for FMS today, but I am now a glaucoma suspect and I heard that it is known to cause intraocular pressure changes in people. Scary. Sorry to ramble. Guest guest
True Tom - but, of course, its easy for you to say that down there in sunny Florida. Thats an interesting thought though. If it raises your metabolism - thats a good thing right? Guess some of our metabolisms don't work right. I know Aikya - you sound like you have that problem. Do you take anything for your thyroid aside from eating kelp, etc? I take a wonderful supplement that brought me up to normal in a short time after being told by Doctors for a year that I needed to be taking Synthroid (and refusing). I brought it up oh so slowly by taking kelp and then it corrected itself in a few weeks with this stuff called T-100. I am going to have to start buying a substitute for my frozen peaches. Where you at in FL Tom? I have friends and family there and my husband grew up there near Boca Raton. Jeanie > From: " tkobzina " <tkobzina@...> > > Aikya, > You wrote:. Guest guest
For my sleepy thyroid I've been following the diet. When I added deglyccerized (sp?) licorice, it seemed nice for the adrenals which partner with the thyroid in being quite wierd. I was taking a kept supplement. I recently read in Balch's book that I could be taking 10 kelp tablets a day; I was only taking 1! I increased slowly...to 1 with each meal for a week...then two with each meal. Next week I'll be up to 10. I read somewhere that the thyroid responds to the levels of estrogen and progesterone in the body and that sometimes. a small amount of progesterone helps. Shaking in my shoes, I tried a progesterone cream from the health food store, KAL's Natural Progesterone. It says to rub a certain amount 3 times a day. Since I'm postmenopause I thought that might be overkill. I did it twice a day for 4 days, once a day yesterday. It makes me fall asleep at 7 PM. I may go to once a day for a while. Falling asleep so early, even though I wake up again, isn't my idea of life. 7 to 9 PM is the time the sexual organs do whatever they do everyday. Did you know each organ has its time of day to get active? It's fascinating. You can kinda tell what's struggling by when you feel tired. Your supplement sounds pretty terrific. Thanks for giving the ingredients and the name and how you get it. Last time my thyroid was off I was on macrobiotics. The practitioner told me the seeweed would enable my thyroid to become normal. It did work although it took a while. Even folks on the thyroid list associated with D'Adamo's website say their naturopathic remedy made in New Zealand takes at least 2 months to kick in. I'm just about at 2 months on the diet and this am my axillary temp was normal. I expect that it will waver..go down and then go up again. We shall see. Guest guest
Aikya - your dilligence is inspirational. I am going to WA state next week for a week all by myself for a Drs. appt. (courtesy of the army) and am thinking it will be good for me. It will be good to get out of this frigid place too. These 4 months Nov. through Feb. are rough here in Fairbanks, AK. I've been having a hard time lately. It will be a challenge to stick with the diet. I am going to accept the fact that I may not entirely - but plan to do a cleanse after Thanksgiving when I get back and then try real hard to be good during the Holiday season. If I mess up I guess I will do another cleanse. Hard to slow down enough to do that though. Enjoy your trip. Guest guest
i think it is also important that you get adequate light. ask your dr. for a perscription for the depression lamp...its a certain kind of light that you sit under for a few minutes every day and is equal to the sunshine that we need to keep depression away and lots of other good benefits too. especially living where there is so little sunlight , you are a good candidate for it. take care, you are in my prayers. robin Re: Multiple answers >From: " jverner " <jverner@...> > >Aikya - your dilligence is inspirational. Guest guest
Hi Aikya, Why are you taking deglycyrrhizinated licorice? The form you are taking is for treating ulcers. If you are trying to treat a sluggish adrenal gland you do not want to remove the glycrrhizin. Licorice mimics the catabolic hormone, cortisol. So if you have low cortisol levels--which can be tested for--you may want to try the licorice. If you have symptoms of the effects of excessive stress--allergies, chronic fatigue, asthma, arthritis and hypoglycemia--its worth trying. Guest guest
I read too that licorice was being used for arthritic conditions....and yet my health food store manager said it is for stomach problems. She never heard of it used for arthritis. So which is it guys? Licorice is good for arthritis? stomach problems? or both? Thanks, Debbie Re: Multiple answers > > > > > > > > > > > > > From: " jverner " <jverner@...> > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Thanks again Pam. Guest guest
Hi Debbie, The catabolic hormone, cortisol, is produced in response to stress. Arthritis and some types of ulcers are both stress-related. Take licorice, which mimics cortisol, to help offset some of the damaging effects of chronic stress, such as sluggish adrenal output that has produced the problems I mentioned previously. You would take a minimum dose of it only if you have low cortisol levels and only for brief periods of time. Alternately, you may take DHEA or Pregnenolone, both anabolic hormones. Aikya should have her adrenals checked before treating hypothyroidism because the symptoms are similar and treatment of the thyroid problem may cause the adrenal problem to worsen. For ulcers, take deglycyrrhizinated licorice if your cortisol levels are normal or high. The glycrrhizin in licorice can result in water retention, hypertension, and low potassium levels.
