Tuesday, April 15, 2008 WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A chemical in some

plastic food and drink packaging including baby bottles may be tied to

early puberty and prostate and breast cancer, the U.S. government said

on Tuesday.

The federal National Toxicology Program said Tuesday that experiments

on rats found precancerous prostate tumors, urinary system problems

and early puberty when the animals were fed or injected with low doses

of the plastics chemical bisphenol-A.

Rep. Dingell, D-Mich., called on FDA Tuesday to reconsider the

safety of bisphenol, saying the toxicology report's findings 'fly in

the face of the FDA's determination.'

Dingell issued letters to seven companies that make baby formulations

earlier this year, questioning whether they use bisphenol in the

lining of their cans and bottles.

The companies included Hain Celestial Group (NASDAQ:HAIN) , Nestle USA

and Abbott Laboratories. (NYSE:ABT)

from claiming they have options to emergency recalls of plastic bottles.

The Hudson's Bay Company has decided to pre-empt Health Canada with

plans for an urgent national recall of plastic baby bottles, cups and

toys containing the synthetic chemical compound from 280 Zellers and

94 Bay stores.

As I said - this one could be very interesting.
