Guest guest
FDA Warns That Cold And Flu Meds Risky For Kids (AP) CBS Broadcasting Inc. Throughout the Twin Cities, pediatricians are saying their offices are packed with kids suffering from coughs and stuffy noses. However, Thursday the FDA warned that over-the-counter cold medicines pose a risk of death or injury for babies and toddlers. Two-year-old Miles recovered from the sniffles recently without getting any cold medication. " I typically don't give them cold medicine, " said Trisha Mesenbring, parent. While Mesenbring follows advice from the FDA, surveys find other parents haven't gotten the message issued last fall. That's why the agency issued the advisory to reiterate what its team of advisor recommended in October 2007. Over a two year period, 1,500 babies and toddlers needed emergency room care from the medications. Dr. Gigi Chawla warns that treating tots with cold medicines can lead to unintentional overdoses. " Kids under the age of two can have heart rhythm disturbance and over-sedation, " said Dr. Gigi Chawla, from Children's Hospital and Clinics. Chawla said the new advice to not medicate can be a hard-sell -- especially for parents who used the stuff on their other kids. " It gives a parent something to do and it makes them feel like they offered something to make them feel better, but truthfully they don't help very much, " she said. Parents are learning patience is best for those all-night coughing spells. " Just liquids and wait it out, " said Kim Sundeen, parent. There are home remedies that may relieve cold symptoms for those little ones. Doctors recommend fluids, a humidifier or steamy bath, and a bulb suction for congestion. Honey is another remedy for a cough, but remember honey should not be given to children under age one -- it is for older children only. The FDA will decide this spring if over the counter cold remedies are appropriate for older children, up to age 12. http://wcco.com/health/cold.medicines.fda.2.632417.html
