Volunteers sought for flu vaccine trial

Posted March 31, 2008 13:08:00

Research centres across the country are recruiting 7,500 people for a

flu vaccine trial which will be one of the largest clinical trials

ever conducted in Australia.

The flu vaccine is already in use, but researchers want to establish

how and when it should be given.

Professor Booy from the National Centre for Immunisation

Research in Sydney says last year's flu season was particularly bad.

He says flu strains have been changing quickly.

" It's drifting, changing all the time, " he said.

" Last year it drifted so much that we had our worst year.

" There were a lot of deaths last year, even in children. At the

Children's Hospital at Westmead we had a lot of cases of the disease. "
