Guest guest
A tragic reminder about carbon monoxide danger editorial By The Denver Post 12/02/2008 06:44:14 AM MST The death over the Thanksgiving holiday of the Lofgren family due to carbon-monoxide poisoning is a great tragedy, and we add our condolences to the many expressed since the Denver family's passing. We also hope the tragedy can be used to draw attention to an issue that threatens other families and grows in importance as cold weather returns to Colorado. Please take the time to make sure your home is equipped with reliable detectors for carbon monoxide. The toxic gas is colorless and odorless and once it fills a room, it can kill within minutes. Such commonplace items as heating units that rely on fossil fuels, open flames, space heaters and cars left running in a garage can cause carbon monoxide at dangerous levels. Don't assume your home has such a detector. Any home, no matter how comfortable, could pose a threat. In the case of the Lofgrens, they were guests at a nearly $9 million vacation home in Aspen. Don't assume the smoke detectors you may have protect you. Smoke detectors don't test for carbon monoxide, though it is possible to buy detectors that check for both. A quick check online shows that detectors for gas come in a wide range of affordable prices, with some as low as $20. That's a small price to pay for your safety and the safety of your family. http://www.denverpost.com/opinion/ci_11114707
