Dave, I do not know how old you are but wanting to surf again is a great goal.

I used to skydive, and animate mascot costumes, and I would love to be able to

do that again, BUT, my not so little body will not cooperate. It is still

telling my how wrong I was to do that in the first place, but hey, if the

opportunity presents itself, we have to try. That is my motto.

I pray that you will be able to surf again, and that in short order. I alwso

pray for your safety both on and off the water.

I used to water ski, eons ago, but I did, and coming off skis at 40 mph can hurt

a lot. I found that out the hard way.

Blessings new friend

Fr. Dave

Older than dirt, heck even ate some of it in his skydiving days.

Dave, I met a lady when I was in the hospital one time many years ago

that had been in so much pain for a very long time. She was in there to

have some nerves cut so she would not feel that chronic pain. I often

wonder if they still do that kind of surgery as a last resort. My ReA is

eating at the nerves in my feet and toes,as well as other parts of my

body, but my feet and toes hurt the worse. I just wonder if I had that

surgery if I would still be able to walk and things like that. Did your

dr say anything about that? I am constant pain too, and have used mind

over matter for so long,I can't tell if it is the ReA or something like

a cold or flu, etc. I have confused my own brain system. Pain pills

hardly work at all,so I wonder if you have had the same problems? I

would love to have some novicane where I can give myself a shot of it in

my tailbone ares and lower back, just to get to sleep at night. They

won't do that though. You have to let them give you a shot, if they

would dare to. And all this worry about becoming addicted to pain drugs.

I really wish my docs could walk in my shoes just one day. I hope you

can get relief from it.I hear that salt water is a great remidy, and if

you are having fun surfing,it's better than sitting home in pain. Which

you probably have a lot of pain the next day, but you still got to have

fun.One giant plus for you! Take care. D. in OR

I can totally understand the fear that any type of surgery will cause

more arthritic pain. My mother recently found out that she is in the

same group as me, has decided to cancel her appointment with her

specialist because she is in fear that even if the doctor is wanting to

do surgery that it will do nothing more than cause more inflammation in

her back. She has already had two previous back surgeries due to

herniated discs several years ago.

I am concern that currently since she is dealing with bone fragments

impenging on some nerves that they may be cut because of the pressure

and I told her so trying to talk her into not canceling the

appointment. But, she is finishing her last semester of school and has

just started her new job. The way that she looks at it is that right

now even though she is having alot of problems with pain, she is just

going to keep going until she having more problems. I talked to her

about my concerns and that I am worried if those bone fragments which

are already giving her some problems could get worse and I would hate

to see that all that she has done to better her life and all of the

schooling that she has done to get into this job would go to waste if

she ends up having nerve damage due to the bone fragments.

But, like the genetics goes, stubborness runs deep in this family. I

just hope that she has at least a year or more before she suffers

anymore severe pain which I feel will be the case if this bone fragment

issue is left untreated. However, I have thought about the fact that

there may be nothing that the doctor can do for it as well.

Dear Barbara and :

thank you for your understanding and personal responses.

YES salt water is very good for many of the problems associated with

my health. In particular the rotten finger and toe tips that are a

secondary but incredibly irritating source of pain.

sounds like E. might have some of the same problems. when i first

showed them to my doctor he gave me a hard time about biting my nails.

I told him i did no such thing; they were just rotting off on their

own. he didn't believe me until all the different specialists who

were treating my different problems: urology, arthritis, spondy, GI,

dermatology and optometry finally got together (because my constant

insistance that they were all related because of the timing on how

they occured or went into remission) and were able to see the forest

thru the trees and make the diagnosis of Reiter's. I spent years

being disbeleived; very frustrating.

besides healing the wounds, the salt water supports my spine so that I

can do range of motion exercises w/o the weight of gravity crushing my

herniated disk and compression fxs. the only reason i can still

standup on a board, i believe, is the adrenaline that pumps thru my

body when i catch a wave (i live in Hawaii so that adrenaline is

substantial cuz the waves can be a bit scary) and the fact that rides

don't last over 30 seconds, and rarely that. walking thru the sand

from my car to the water and back is more difficult for me than the

surfing!

Been going to physical therapy but my therapist is frustrated with me

because w/o the surgery she feels their is little that can be done.

Still, the body mechanics reminders have been helpful and until I hear

about a new procedure for fusions that doesn't actually fuse the bones

(implants?) I'm sticking with what little I've got.

Codeine and tylenol help a little bit for the pain; but I think those

few seconds I spend every day riding waves are the only time I am not

in conscious pain. I don't want to chance losing that with the

surgery, dave

Oh my gosh, what an inspiration you are Mr. Surfing Dave from Hawaii!

It is so true that the ocean heals. Especially clean, tropical waters. That is

so lovely that the joy of surfing keeps you going.

Thanks for sharing. You made my day!

-Is your nerve involved because of bone spurs or the surgery? I have a

ton of bone spurs growing off of my lower spine, but never really

thought about the nerves being cut by them.I'm glad you said

something,I will ask my dr if I have a chance of that happening. But I

know messing with the spine and surgery is a big risk.My brother had

some work done on his neck after a car accedent, and he was so sick

after the surgery, and had bad headaches for 2 years, finally they found

that the surgery didn't heal properly, and spinal fluid was leeking into

his brain. They had to go back in and repair that, and then found he had

an extra nerve being crushed by a vertabre, and had to remove that

nerve. What a mess, and so much pain.He is the one with Ankylosing

Spondilitis too. The dr told him one more big jolt, he will be

paralized.I hope you have better luck than he has.I want to get my neck

checked because I get so many headaches, but after his story, I don't

know if I should take a chance.Let us know what you are going to do.I

have a tail bone that is like a sore thumb. It is so hard to sit

anymore.I lay on my side lounging instead of sitting because it hurts

so bad.Even in my wheelchair, I can only take it for a short time.I'd

like to know if you get it done, how it works out. Thanks, and God bless.
