There's always SAMe, which usually seems overpriced. But then, compare to the cost of prescription meds, plus doctor's office fees, insurance coverage, etc. The Life Extension Foundation introduced SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine) into the U.S. in 1997. Directory of LEF articles about SAMe : http://lef.org/prod_hp/php120.html#articles Currently, the Life Extension Foundation has their annual super sale for members, until Jan 31, 2001 (membership fee: $75 per year). See details at: http://www.lef.org LEF retail Super sale member price: volume price: SAMe 200 mg 20 tabs --> $24.95 --> $11.48 (twelve box purchase) A 12 box purchase = 240 tabs - for $149.48 (299.40 retail). Shipping = $4.50, or 2nd day air = $9.50 (any sized order). The usual SAMe dosage is said to be 3 - 4 tabs per day, so 240 tabs is a 60 - 80 day supply -- although some people with serious depression required 6 - 8 tabs daily, in clinical trials. TMG (trimethylglycine) is converted into SAMe by the body. Reportedly, the following combination works, taken daily -- but what is the conversion rate ? The equivalence to standardized 200 mg tabs of SAME is unknown, and reportedly varies widely, depending upon your intestinal microflora, etc. Your mileage will vary. This formula may not work for some people who would respond well to SAMe : TMG: 3 g + B12: 2 mg + B6: 200 mg + Folic Acid: 4 mg + Zinc: 75 mg (coenzyme B vitamins may improve results) LEF also supplies TMG : LEF retail Super sale member price: volume price: TMG 500 mg 180 tabs --> $18.00 --> $10.46 (four bottle purchase) Bill .. Guest guest
Not really Doris. It is on the use of one antidepressant, and 2 success stories. I would like to know how long the lady has been riding her bike before I got real excited. The part of this story that makes sense to me is the gradualness of the treatment and the recovery. I get great energy from my antidepressant, St. s Wort, but I have been using it kind of hit or miss, like I do much of my protocol these days. But I will try to be more methodical and see what happens. When I have something to report, I will. Adrienne antidepressants This article is on the use of antidepressents to treat CRIDS. Have we gone around again on this? They used to give us all antidepressents. I remember them saying it would give me more energy. Never did a thing for me. But I thought it was then shown in studies that antipressents just weaken the immune system, and they don't do any good (unless someone has secondary depression of course.) http://www.immunesupport.com/library/bulletinarticle.cfm?ID=5234 & PROD=P234 Doris
Guest guest
It's one of those matters that some people benefit from something and others do not. There are a lot of treatments out there that have brought about remission for some people with CFS. That doesn't mean that it works for everyone with CFS. And with this disorder, because of the mix of causes and mix of affected systems of the body, and differences in genetics and pathogens and such, there is no way that there is a one size fits all treatment. The fact that they are assuming that two people's responses to something could be cause for a possible treatment for everyone just shows how nieve they are. (I noticed that it was a UK article, which always brings about suspicion of what diagnostic criteria were used, since they did not describe symptoms other than extreme fatigue in the article) My personal experience with several different antidepressants was a disaster that caused significant degradation of my health and caused panic attack problems that took over a year to finally resolve, AFTER discontinuing the antidepressants. And it was torture while I was on them. Each one I tried had major side effects associated with seretonin syndrome, even at extremely low dose. They caused significant sleep interference in spite of the fact that they were supposed to improve sleep, and majorly aggravated my IBS, allergies, infections, and caused Parkinson's-like tremors. The longer I took them the worse the problems became. St. 's Wort was also a disaster for me, causing extreme irritability and depression. I've tolerated SAM-e well, but it has not brought about remission of my symptoms. I also use 5-HTP and Rhodiola, but they also don't bring about remission. I've used L-Theanine in the past, and tolerated it well, but it didn't do enough to justify the cost. But I know that there are others that have not tolerated SAM-e, 5-HTP, Rhodiola or L-Theanine. My bioneurofeedback therapist told me that she could have predicted that I would not tolerate antidepressants, based on my brain wave patterns. She also told me that I would have problems with benzodiazapines as well, which I have. According to her, I would probably benefit from certain anti-seizure medications, but it would not be a cure for me, it would only reduce certain symptoms. I know that Anne Hillebrand also pushes antidepressants as part of her treatment protocol, because it worked for her. Why this works for some and doesn't for others is just an example of how different we all are. It is unfortunate when something is hailed as a cure-all for all of us like this, especially in light of the fact that it has the potential to significantly cause damage, as was my experience with antidepressants. It reminds me of graded exercise programs, which some people do benefit from, but makes others much worse. lindaj@... antidepressants > This article is on the use of antidepressents to treat CRIDS. Guest guest
I started out on Welbutrin and Effexor. Now I am on Welbutrin and Prozac. I also have Klonopin(very low dose) for when my stress/anxiety gets out of hand. I am very thankful for these meds. What a difference they have made for my family!!!!!! draindog_54 wrote: Hi everyone. Thanks for welcoming me and all the encouragement:)I realize that antidepressants are recommended during treatment...and did try paxil and zoloft in the '90's with 2 of my interferon treatments. Can't really say for sure if they helped then since I wasn't too depressed to begin with. This time around I decided to go without the antidepressants. Now, after 4 months on Pegasys I am realizing that maybe I should have considered taking those as well. I am starting on Celexa this week and realize it takes 3-4 weeks to realize any benefits from it...but I was wondering which antidepressants many of you take and if any of you have any opinions or preferences on any? Guest guest
I took Elavil for years and it seemed to help some, especially with sleep. However, I took it much longer than I should have and it stopped working, I think. I have tried Cymbalta and it worked very well, but it can have side effects. I went off it but am thinking of trying it again.
