Hi,

I have a friend who has built a " Mr. Thumpy " from a Radio Shack strobe

light kit. He was asking me about how to tell north and south on the

magnetic coil. I've never built one myself and wasn't sure whether he

needed to pay any attention to the north and south on that type of device,

and have no idea of how to find out in any event. Anyone have any ideas on

this?

Hi Dennis

I use a compass on my Beck magnetic pulser. Hold the compass near to

one side of the coil, fire, if the needle is attracted to the coil,

then that is the north pole, if repelled than that is the south pole.

The North pole is preferred to use.

Thanks Dave,

I would never have thought about using a compass. It makes sense and is

so simple. I guess I'm too use to looking for the " difficult " answers. The

easy ones simply fly right by me.
