Guest guest
Nice post .... When mine came on I was very stressed.... ________________________________ From: <jmsmccormack@...> Sent: Saturday, October 8, 2011 2:09 PM Subject: Reactive Arthritis " stress " brain function " gaba " Â Just wondering if anyone else out there came down with this disease or suffer major flare ups while under extreme stress? I know I was under extreme stress when I came down with this illness and I notice that this last flare up was stress related. I have been researching this illness for 6 years now. I have read stress causes inflammatory conditions. As the gaba centers in the brain cannot control the stress response any more and it turns into a run away train fight or flight constant symptoms. Im hoping to find somthing that will take this illness away. Im now expermenting with colloidal silver for any infection, and also trying brain supplements to increase gaba in my brain to control the stress response. I encourage all of you sick with this illness to increase gaba in your brains to control flare ups. I will keep this post updated if I notice any improvments. Guest guest
, I was just recently officially diagnosed with this disease. It is kind of difficult to explain. As an adolescent I was diagnosed with it but I assumed that it went away when I became an adult. Don't ask me why? Looking back I see that is baloney. My whole life I have had weird symptoms here and there and just assumed that it was just my defective body. This last flare was the straw that broke the camel's back so to speak. It impacted my mobility so much that I could not walk without a cane. As a 36 year old woman that really freaked me out. In reflection I see patterns of high stress moment in my life that resulted in a period of time where I had weird physical symptoms. Stiff feet that felt like cubes of cement and low back pain. I have been in a severe flare all summer, and in actuality for the last year. I was having problems with my sacroiliac and had an injection of steroid in April 2011. That didn't work very well. In July my fourth toe on my right food swelled up and it was diagnosed with a cellulitis. I went through 6 weeks of antibiotic infusions twice a day which naturally did nothing since it was not the correct diagnosis. Finally I was correctly diagnosed and sent to a rheumatologist who started me on a more appropriate treatment plan. I'm still not a 100% but I am walking without a limp. If I has stress or over do it with too much activity I most definitely feel it. It's difficult for my family to understand. I seem to look ok so they think I must be ok. This is a chronic condition and should be treated as such. Reducing stress, lots of rest, eating a well balanced diet rich in whole foods are things that you can control. I hope your experiment works. Phoebe ________________________________ From: <jmsmccormack@...> Sent: Saturday, October 8, 2011 11:09 AM Subject: Reactive Arthritis " stress " brain function " gaba "  Just wondering if anyone else out there came down with this disease or suffer major flare ups while under extreme stress? Guest guest
I did indeed experience severe panic/stress in the years of my initial Staph infections and moderate amounts during the period when clearly Reiter's/ReA symptoms began to appear in earnest. I have not found stress management to relieve my symptoms now in any drastic fashion, but it certainly should help to some degree since we all know how intimately the nervous and immune systems are tied together..... My best suggestions for treatment of stress/anxiety that i can think of off the top of my head are: L-Theanine GABA (doesn't cross the blood-brain barrier in large amounts but does enter the spinal cord and can be metabolized into the brain indirectly) Magnesium 5-HTP Kava Kava (low doses, take with caution; interactions with medications, other supplements and liver damage are possible in larger doses) Ashwagandha extract Rhodiola Rosea extract L-Glutamine (GABA precursor) Relora ......I hope this is helpful! If there's one recommendation I can make, it would be to avoid benzodiazepine anti-anxiety meds (if taken for more than a couple of days in a row, or any long term fashion even if the doses are somewhat spread out) if at all possible, because they are even more dependency-forming than opiate pain meds and the withdrawals (though I personally have managed to avoid experiencing them myself) are horrible. - from Maine
Guest guest
This is fascinating. i have only recently realized that I tend to have a heightened fight or flight response when I'm in a flare - i tend to be a lot more anxious, jumpy, paranoid, checking the locks several times, take things a lot more personally, etc. So I know the two are related. But I was starting to think the cause and effect was the other way around. When there's a flare, the body feels like it's under " attack " , and this " attack " response gets interpreted in the brain as a " fight or flight " emotional response. Just a theory and I could be dead wrong. But that is interesting that researchers are looking into a possible link between the two. Guest guest
For me too, stress is a trigger. All my major flares came because of stress. So I spend more time now doing de-stress activities. I need a lot of alone time to recharge my batteries. And I say no to too many commitments. People don't understand when you say you can't do something as they think you look ok. I am going to a new Naturapathic doctor next week as I am so tired of dealing with regular doctors. I'll let you know what happens. Wishing everyone less stress. Prayer works for me. Blessings Priscilla

Guest guest
I keep wondering if what you all are saying about stress applies in my case. It might. I had been taking antidepressants for about 3 years and got off of them. Meanwhile a lot of stressful things were happening in the family. And boom, I had a major flare-up and ended up getting diagnosed with reactive arthritis. It's all just so frustrating, wondering if there is something different I could have done to prevent this, and wondering if it will go away, get worse, stay the same or what. I had some home maintenance stuff to do today, and it was just so hard for me. I hate this. -- Kay in Ohio
