Have you tried Houston's chewable enzymes?

RE: Re: enzymes

Thanks ,

Someone else just mentioned that to me. Could you tell me how it tastes and is it easy to hide in juice or something? I’ve tried two prescriptions Creon and Viocase along with the Houstons. Creon had to be hidden in food and was bead-like in texture and my son refused every food I gave them in. The Viocase was the most disgusting thing I have ever tasted and he hated it. I have to be very careful and honestly I’m tired of spending money on things that sit in my cupboard unused.

Thank you,

My sons hate these! (they are 3 and 5) can anyone recommend a tastier chewable enzyme? thanks, lisa

Thank you,

Dear all,

We have always used the powdered form because our son was too young

last year for tablets or capsules. We find they have no smell and no

taste and we are all taking them over a year later.

Nasreen - I would like to say how much we agree with Mandi. Using

enzymes was really the first intervention we tried (about the same

time as putting epsom salt in the evening bath) - and WOW! we were

stunned at the improvement we observed. We immediately wondered why

none of the many doctors we had been seeing had suggested this.

We quickly realised that " die-off " can be a temporary regression of

some symptoms (as the body clears out) which often overlaps with the

most wonderful improvements.

Best wishes,

Sandy

This new web link provides a really good summary! I can remember

having a real struggle last year working out which to take and where

to get them from.

We were really cautious and went for the ones without papain - simply

because if some sensitive children could have a problem with papain

then Eddie probably would because he was more allergic than anyone we

had heard about. So we started with AFP Peptizyde, Zyme Prime and No

Fenol powders. They worked so well - we are still on them now.

Best wishes,

Sandy

# AFP Peptizyde - AFP Peptizyde™ is the same high DPP IV formulation

as original Peptizyde™ except that papain has been removed and another

protease added. Same effective product but without the papain odor.

Better for those sensitive to fruit-based enzyme products.

# HN Zyme - HN-Zyme Prime is a formulation of twelve enzymes to assist

digestion of carbohydrates, fats, starches, fibers and phenolic foods

# No Fenol - No-Fenol is designed to help assimilate phenolic foods

and is also helpful with vegetarian diets.

# Peptizyde - Peptizyde™ is a multiple protease formulation to assist

digestion of casein, gluten, soy, corn, and other food proteins. It is

one of the highest DPP IV peptidase-containing products available.

# Zyme Prime - Zyme Prime (no " HN " ) is similar to HN Zyme Prime to

assist digestion of carbohydrates, fats, starches, fibers and phenolic

foods but contains no papain, bromelain or rice bran.

Hi everyone just thought that I would ask on here as to what enzymespeople would recommend. My daughter tried Kirkman's complete but itdidn't go down too well as she cannot tolerate bromelain or papain. Ialso feel that she has issues with high phenol foods so anysuggestions would be great.

>>I highly recommned Houstons (I also distribute them in UK but I loved them for 5 years before that!)

AFP Peptizyde for gluten casein, soya, protiens in general

Zyme Prime (not HN Zyme) broad spectrum, fats, carbs etc

No Fenol fruits, fibres, veg and those with phenol issues

none of these have bromelin or Papaya in.

Are you on any diet already? Do you do Epsom Salts baths?

Hi Emma

I am sure Mandi will respond soon. s gut is from hell quite frankly the two things which made a remarkable difference over the years are Houstons Enzymes and Probiotics. Other bits too but big wows with these... Now we too have used Kirkmans everything in the begining, some good others not so good.

It was probably Mandi who got us to try Houstsons years ago and s bowel improved a bit. But sometimes things roll along up and down like most times. The one remarkable thin g that I remember from about 4 years ago was a stupid dietician suggesting we try off a gfcf diet. Many people I know can do this with their kids and I was quite keen to have go and we did. Things went quite well initially and it was great to eat out as we were away that summer, things seemed to be going not too bad, stools not bad, behaviour pretty good but then we were at PECS summer school and who was completely non-verbal then (5 years old) took to this like a duck to water... Things started to go a bit downhill, we had an appointment with our paediatrician, way abck when I still liked her!! Long story...

Surprisisngly she said mmmm, might be gluten building up again blah blah, I thought maybe I will try her off these enzymes! WEll my god! You have never seen anything like it, I took her off all the Houstons Enzymes and all hell broke loose... She screamed one Sunday for around 4 hours was prescribed diazepam, you know syrup form (5 years old imagine!!)... We never used it but we were shattered... thats kinda when you know supplements are ACTUALLY WORKING.... Started back on Enzymes things got better, and better on the diet than off too.

So long story but thats why a fan Cos I know for a very horrible experience that for MY child they make a huge difference to her. We have pretty undigested food in her stools with them imagine what it would all be like without them. So I am sticking on them. FOR SURE...

Have you read the book Enzymes and Autism, theres a copy in the TA Library which I presume you are a member of... When you join TA you can chose that as your freebokk too I think, Mandi will correct me if wrong and tell you why she loves em...

Lotsa Love Craoline

Hi Mandi yes my daughter has been strictly on the diet and no soy or

corn either and low sugas since October and she has 2 cupfulls of

epsom salts every night in her bath.

What is it about these enzymes that you love would be v interested to

know as Caroline was also full of praise for them. It would be so

excellent if they helped Sophie's gut which is not great

Thanks for replying

>>Hi Emma

I love HOUSTON enzymes because they gave me my family back and 10 days after starting them and coming OFF the GFCF diet my son had his first formed normal stool and hasn't looked back int he bowel department. Our first big biomed WOW.

We could go to family gatherings, eat out, go to the park without worrying some duck had left a morsel of bread on the ground etc

We saw improvements with Milk Free, a tad more with Casein Free, nothing extra from GF but these were the old days, if you weren't GFCF you were a BAD parent.

On top of that, if the diet didn't work for you, the diet die hards were akin to Bettleheim IMHO - as in ITS YOUR FAULT if it doesn't work you cannot possibly be doing it right. You can tell I still have the emotional scars from that experience

Anyways, I love HNI enzymes and Devin Houston - confirmed last night he will be coming along to the Meet & Greet Evening on conference eve (7.2.07), I have many buddies including Caroline who want to shake his hand and say thanks for making those enzymes!

It would obviously make life great if could eat anything at all. At the moment he is SCD and we avoid high oxalates. He has made great progress on these diets. Would you be tempted to try houstons in my situation? I would probably be too wary about changing to Houstons as is making progress but would like to think about it all the same.

>>If the diet is working and not taking over your lives then I wouldn't stop it. Enzymes can ADD something for many of the children. Not all can come off the diet straight away, some have particular foods it seems they will always need to avoid.

IMHO the diets are a band-aid, enzymes are actively healing in their own right, actively digesting and releasing nutrients which in turn help to heal the gut and feed the body.

Using a special diet doesn't stop you using enzymes and visa versa.

The folks who got the most excited back in April 2001 when the first HNI enzymes were first produced, were those that had been on the GFCF diet for many years. Most find as time goes on the kids become intolerant of more and more foods, rice even all sorts. So when the diet is so restricted your child can only handle air then something has to be done - this is not a healthy way to live and untenable in the long term (in the short term too IMHO). Many of the early memebrs on the enzymes and autism list were down to 4-6 foods only........

Compared to what we spend on other supps HNI enzymes are dirt cheap, one pots worth at £13.25 (a months supply at average full dose) is enough to let you know whether they will be helpful for your child, something esle that can rarely be said about other supps.

I read the other parents posts, ordered 12 pots on my first order (I think Devin thought I was barking - he's not the first and won't be the last LOL), stopped the diet the day they arrived - this is not recommended BTW - they have guidelines now. What I wanted was to not have nutty behaviours and rashes with G & C foods, What I didn't expect was for my kid to improve in all sorts of ways, sensory issue decreased ++++, formed poops for first time ever and many other gains - these were all a bonus and for this I will be forever grateful.

improvements in socialisation. The

school noticed the progress too. On

the down side the regular regressions are difficult.

Anyones opinion would be valued!

Hi Elaine, you can start the enzymes without going off the diet, we

found that they helped his gut while still being SCD. word of warning

though, for us they were not enough on their own, as when we tried

introducing carbs his bms changed for the worst again and now we cannot

get back to where we were no matter what. (have not tried introducing

gluten so cannot comment on that, just that we needed both SCD and

ZymePrime to get a flat tummy and decent stools..)

Mandi and natasa,

Thanks for your replies.

is on kirkmans enzymes with isogest  and after your comments I will stick

to what is working with just now.  We are at the end of mb12 trial at the moment

which has gone well and we will be moving onto dmg  next week so perhaps now isn’t

the time to be thinking of making unnecessary changes.

It is just that is 10

in July and I sometimes worry that I have missed the boat big time.  We spent the first 5/6 years concentrating on ABA, GF/CF, enzymes and

vits only. If only we knew more about biomed before the Edinburgh conference. But I guess we all have

if only’s…….

At least he is progressing ATEC November 2005 89 (or so), ATEC

January 2007, 57. So that is good news.

Heres to progress all round.

On top of that, if the diet didn't work for you, the diet die hards were akin to Bettleheim IMHO - as in ITS YOUR FAULT if it doesn't work you cannot possibly be doing it right. You can tell I still have the emotional scars from that experience Anyways, I love HNI enzymes and Devin Houston - confirmed last night he will be coming along to the Meet & Greet Evening on conference eve (7.2.07), I have many buddies including Caroline who want to shake his hand and say thanks for making those enzymes! Nina, Mandi, and others,

The " old " days are still here I'm afraid. I have found a DAN I quite

frankly admire very much, but when I told him I wouldn't go GFCF

again (it would make it the 3rd time) because it didn't help my son

anymore and the diet is too restrictive he told me that I hadn't done

it right because my son wasn't on diflucan during GFCF!

Had he said that to me 18 months ago I would have been devastated and

full of self-recrimination. Didn't hurt my feelings a bit now as I

know he's simply parroting what he's been told in his training, and,

I've learned from the experience of other parents that his comment is

just stupid.
