Guest guest
A few months ago I related to the group that I was starting yoga in an effort to improve my sleep. As I've gotten older my sleep was getting poorer and poorer and it had gotten to the point that the only way I could insure a good night's sleep was by taking a sleeping pill. My mother also had this problem in her later years. (It did not affect her longevity however since, as I've mentioned many times before, my mother lived to the ripe old age of almost 98 and was healthy and independent til about 7 months before her death.) After starting the yoga I noticed on one of the science websites that NIH is doing studies on yoga and sleep, so you might say that NIH and I are studying/experimenting with it at the same time. I'm almost afraid to report it (the old " jinx " theory) but my sleep does seem to be greatly improved. Other benefits: I previously reported that my body is " longer " and " leaner " looking. As time goes on, it will be interesting to see if the yoga does even more (as it is purported to do) such as improve mood, etc. Who couldn't use some mood enhancement? I'll take whatever I can get out of it. I use a tape. I bought it on ebay very cheap - It's called " Yoga, Mind and Body " . I liked it after trying out several that I borrowed first from the public library. After trying several that didn't seem to be right for me I settled on this one and am convinced that the right tape or class can make a big difference. I've been doing it every day to give the experiment the best chance of working out. Interesting how such small changes in one's life can have such a big impact. Guest guest
The Tape Yoga for Weight Loss is very good also a beginning type of tape (although I doubt it will have much effect on weight) Positive Dennis Francesca Skelton wrote: A few months ago I related to the group that I was starting yoga in an effort to improve my sleep. Guest guest
Hi Dennis: Don't underestimate the possibility that yoga may help with weight loss. Eating too much is a phenomenon of the mind. Yoga and some types of meditation etc. have been shown to have beneficial effects on mental functioning in many ways. So for some it may help with normalization of appetite and weight. Guest guest
I can tell you that the tape I use is a real workout - it' s not sissy stuff. My heart is beating quickly (aerobic), my body is supported at times only on my hands (strength) and of course yoga is famous for the flexibility it yields. I''ve definitely lost some diameter in my waist, whether from the workout itself or from the stretching. So whether mentally or physically, it'would make sense to help with weight control. on 11/6/2004 10:03 AM, Rodney at perspect1111@... wrote: > > Hi Dennis: > > Don't underestimate the possibility that yoga may help with weight > loss. Guest guest
I like the tape but the title is clearly a marketing ploy. There is no guided imagery about weight loss for example. Guest guest
Hi Dennis: There is no 'guided imagery' about weight loss, or much else, in other types of yoga/meditation. But just the same, these techniques seem to 'normalize' lots of things that may have been out of kilter - not just appetite - without having to make directed efforts in any specific direction .............. beyond just following the instructions. I bet, for example, that the techniques Francesca has been using have not in any way required her to do anything that is specifically aimed at improving sleep. But she has seen an improvement (normalization) in her sleep nonetheless. (Correct me if I am wrong abouit that, please, Francesca). Guest guest
Correct. I have just done the class every day as instructed on the tape. Of course there's also lots of deep breathing and a brief relaxation at the end as would be the case in most yoga sessions. Although strenuous exercise in general is supposed to help with sleep, I have not found that to be true. As I've said, I've tried everything.......I am hoping that the yoga continues to work. on 11/6/2004 4:02 PM, Rodney at perspect1111@... wrote: > > Hi Dennis: > > There is no 'guided imagery' about weight loss, or much else, in > other types of yoga/meditation.
