>> If they exist have you or anybody kept track of them on a statistical

or case-study level - if so is the Pritkin diet for them 100% CHD proof

but also does the diet help keep at bay the other diseases (prostate

cancer etc), not really interested in short term studies right now, more

interested in those who have followed a pritkin style diet for decades.

And of those that have also died after a long period on Pritkin diet,

were they living longer than the norm (78 years or so). If there are

only a few case studies you can draw upon, then what is your gut feeling

as to the answer to my question (I realise not many people may have been

dedicated enough to follow pritkin for decades, but maybe you know of a

few who have)

Not to avoid the question, but the problem is how do you track someone

for 30-40 or more years? And control what they eat? And their

activity levels? We have published favorable data on 5 year follow ups

on particpants who went thru the program on Diabetes and Heart disease

and also some recent data on prostate cancer on long term followers of

the program (>10 years). Of course, their adherence level was by their

own admission, which we acknowledged in the published study.

I could tell you about the ones I do know personally who are in their

90s, or 100s but I am not sure that would be fair as again, I cant

attest for their adherence other than by their own admission. However,

my personal favorite was a man who was a pharmacist who came here when

we first opened in the mid 70s. He was in his 70s at the time and had

claudication and didn't want to go on medication. So he came here for

30 days. 10 years later, feeling so good, he took up a new hobby,

race walking. In the next 20 years (yes from age 80-100) he won like 30

medals in the senior olympics in race walking. He passed away recently

around 105 or so. The problem is, I can only account somewhat for his

last 30 years as we stayed in touch since I met him, and not the first

70. What I thought was more telling, was that I saw him not long

before he died and he didn't look as well, emotionally or physically.

You could tell something was wrong. Turned out he had just lost his

wife of 70 years or so. It seemed like that had a bigger negative

impact on him than all the other positive stuff had had on him over the

years. He died not long after that. ny Cash also died not long

after losing his wife June (not that ny was the picture of

health or a healthy lifestyle). So, there are many factors we don't

normally think about.

When 60 minutes did their first story on us, they found 3 local cardiac

patients who they put thru the program. They did a 30 day follow up

story and a one year follow up both with excellent results. We are now

talking with 60 minutes again about doing a 30 year re-union, and like

you suggest, trying to see how many of these original participants are

still around and that we can find and get back here for a special

reunion program and show. THAT will be fascinating if we can pull it

off.

>>(2) what do you do about friendly bacteria (nothing?, yogurt, Kefir,

supplements etc)

Rely on a health digestive system.

>>(3) do you feel soya consumption (isolate or food) and Whey Isolate

Protein, in moderation, is safe for human health (some argue it is not).

I am not sure that any one food (and I mean real food) in moderation, in

the context of an otherwise healthy lifestyle would in and of itself ,

be harmful. I am sure there are exceptions to that basic comment, but

as we have discussed, protein, is not the most important concern for

most people at least not in the concern of " not getting enough " . I also

usually recommend that people try their best to get their nutrients from

whole foods first (food first) and than if and when necessary, look to

supplements (or isolated nutrients) second (supplements second) and use

them in an intelligent way (as is discussed on this list) with a reason,

and an understanding of all the potential postive and potential

negatives.

>>(4) what motivated you at such an early age to follow a pritkin type

diet (ethical, health concerns etc)? (ignore this if it's too personal)

I don't mind answering and I'll get to this one later today, but, as I

just told a group of students from Broward School (we are doing a story

with NBC on school lunch program), I didn't know what I wanted to do

when I grew up and someone asked me, " what are your favorite two

subjects in school? " and I answered " well, gym and lunch! " . (That's

exercise and diet in todays terms.) And the rest is history. :)

Regards

Jeff

excellent, I just wanted to know really whether their were some

following Pritkin who did make very good ages (I realise you cannot

be sure how well they followed it) but you've confirmed that at

least pritkin is a way for some of the people you knew of to have a

long life span.

thanks again

Did I mention our medical director Dr Bauer, one of our co-founders back

in the 70s? He just recently went to part-time, so he reduced his

workload from 6 to 5, 12 hour days. He is now getting ready to retire

and will be going to 4, 12 hour days in doing so! :)

He is 86! And sharp as a whip
