Guest guest
Welcome ! I am an almost 9 year thyca survivor. I was dx'd with papillary thyca and had a TT along with 3 rounds of RAI. When that didn't work they suggested Ext Beam and that was when I said " No more " and went to Dr. Brownstein who put me on Armour and Iodine and that is how I healed You can read my story on my website at www.naturalthyroidchoices.com (word of warning my stupid website doesn't like firefox for a browser so use IE). As for the patch test. It isn't a patch you can buy it is something you do. You take liquid iodine and paint it on your skin. The theory being that if it disappears quickly then you are deficient. This only addresses the skin and iodine is used by every gland and mucosal lining so you will not know how deficient you are. The best way to find this out is to get an Iodine loading test (you can find the ordering info in the files section of the group) from Hakala, FFP or VRP. I believe that they work with Canada clients. No doctor needed to order them. Hope that helps! Guest guest
Oh! I feel so silly now. That makes more sense :-) But I'll look into the iodine loading test now instead, thank you! I'd rather have the most conclusive test possible. On another note - does anyone have any advice for thyroid-related acne? I have had perfectly clear skin since eliminating gluten from my diet in January. However, I had a reaction to Synthroid and have had TERRIBLE acne ever since. It coincided with going on a higher dose than I started off at, and within a week I broke out in hives and then gradually my skin got worse and worse. My endo thinks it was a reaction to the dye in the pill, because my skin was fine on the lower dose (white) pills (the higher dose were purple). I don't know what to do. It has now been almost 2 months on Armour and while the acne is not as bad as it was, I'm still breaking out. Can the dye really stay in my system that long? Is there any way to get rid of it faster or could this be something else? Any help you folks have would be much appreciated! > > Welcome ! > > I am an almost 9 year thyca survivor. Guest guest
You can see more info on the iodine loading test here: http://www.hakalalabs.com/ One question on the acne. Did you have RAI post TT? If you did your liver may be toxic. Mine was budging out of my rib cage. You may want to do a liver cleanse. Try some zinc for your acne and also taking hydrogen peroxide with Epsom salts mixed together in some water and pat it on your face. That helped me. Guest guest
No I didn't have to get RAI... I had a PT only. I've been working with a naturopath for almost a year now and was on Ultra Clear Plus / Ultra Clear Plus PH for several months which I was told would really help detoxify my liver. Or do you recommend something else? I don't know if this is meaningful or not but I am breaking out along the jawline area and the forehead, not on the cheeks. Besides Armour (60mg) I am taking the following: -probiotics (HMF Genestra) -Moducare plant sterols (for immune system / allergies) -vitamin D3 -vitamin B complex -Metagenics Multi Mineral Chelate (includes zinc) -antioxidant complex (includes zinc) -fish oil -biotin -calcium/magnesium (1:1 ratio) All up I am getting about 60mg/day of zinc, is that sufficient? > > You can see more info on the iodine loading test here: > http://www.hakalalabs.com/ > > One question on the acne. Guest guest
Ok, that's very different from what they do here. It is an automatic total thyroidectomy. Ultraclear plus is what I was on to clear my liver. Steph Re: New here > No I didn't have to get RAI... Guest guest
I see. By sick you mean symptomatic with evidence of progressing CLL? I suppose you may know that there's no standard approach to CLL and it's important to consider all your treatment options with a CLL expert if at all feasible? If you post your location, list members may be able to provide some suggestions. There are also molecular markers that may be important to the decision process as well, that may denote higher or lower-risk CLL - which might help decide on the timing and even the types of treatments - although how to use this information is not clear yet ... sorry there are so many Mays, Mights, and Maybes in my commment : ) All the best, Karl > > Hi Karl > > I will be on Rituxan, Cytoxan and Fludara. Guest guest
KarlHi again. I live in Toms River NJ. I already tried IVIG for 4 months with no improvement and horrible side effects so that my oncologist and pulmonologist stopped that. The infections and lymph node enlargement are coming more and more often, there has only been a two week period this year when I was not being treated for some infection. and the lymph nodes in my groin are pressing on nerves and making walking difficult, so my onclologist decided last week we should'nt put it off any further. ThanksBe wellDeb

Guest guest
Hi Deb, I'm not a doctor but agree that the decision sounds reasonable and the timing seems right. FCR is perhaps the most active protocol - it can be very effective - can result in durable remissions. See for a recent report http://tinyurl.com/2zyx2k Wishing you the best! Guest guest
you are in dire need of iodine IMO. a higher dose like 50mg may be easier to tolerate than a lower one. Gracia Hello, I've been reading posts whenever I have the time and energy. I've had so many symptoms for the past 25 years that it would take too much space to list them all, so for now I'll just say that chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and hypoglycemia were the most obvious when my health started to get really bad. Looking back, though, I can see that I have a lot of symptoms even when I was a child. I started taking NOW brand potassium iodide 2 weeks ago because of low body temperature. I had been taking a thyroid glandular on and off, and although I felt better when I took it, my body temperature was still very low. I started with just one tablet (225 mcg), and my digestion improved. One morning I decided to take two tablets, and not long thereafter, I started to feel terrible. Fortunately, that day I started to come across some of the very good sites about iodine, including www.iodine4health.com and breastcancerchoices.org, and realized that I was most likely detoxing bromine. This is all very exciting for me, because this might be getting very close to the root of all my problems. I have 4 sisters and a brother who all grew up on the same diet, though, and they didn't have the issues I had as a child, so there was something different about my body, but I don't know what.I started taking 1/2 a tablet of Iodoral 10 days ago, and then after a few days increased it to a whole tablet. When I increased to a whole tablet, the detox symptoms became too severe, so I'm back to 1/2 a tablet. When the pain of detoxing is very severe, I feel like I don't want to be alive. When the detoxing isn't so severe, I start to think about how amazing this whole thing is, and become very hopeful that some day I will be able to live a normal life again. A normal life to me would mean being able to eat, sleep, be somewhat pain free, be able to think and focus, and have enough energy to do what I need to do to take care of myself.Thank you this forum. I appreciate it.Betsy No virus found in this incoming message.Checked by AVG - http://www.avg.com Version: 8.0.176 / Virus Database: 270.9.15/1837 - Release Date: 12/8/2008 9:38 AM
Guest guest
Yes, after I started taking it I read about kelp possibly containing contaminants. For that reason, and also because NOW brand does not contain iodine, (but also because you have to take 48 tablets of NOW brand to equal 1 Iodoral), I have bought Iodoral and started using that instead. However, I must say that the symptoms that I got from the NOW brand potassium iodide were very clearly bromine detox symptoms. And, the symptoms would go away with the salt water and/or Vit C. Guest guest
de nada! FWIW I started on 50mg Iodoral. after 3 months I thought I was supposed to go to a maintenance dose of 12.5mg. the day I did that I went from being functional to being nonfunctional and I could barely walk. I went right back to 50mg and now take 100mg. have you looked at http://www.fibromyalgiarecovery.com ? gracia Gracias, Gracia,I have to admit that I'm afraid to try that, but I will read around and if I read that enough people found that to be true, I will try it when I have a couple of days that I don't have to go to work. I am using only logic here, and this might be an issue that defies logic. I feel okay on a small amount, twice as much makes me feel terrible, 8 times as much will surely do me in!!! I am wondering if a small amount causes some kind of die-off, but if you take the larger amount, it actually helps your body deal with the die-off. For a short while the other night the symptoms were scary. My heart felt like it was collapsing and I was having a hard time breathing. Crazy, huh? So, you started at 50mg!!! I will try it this weekend. Am I being foolish not trying it immediately? Maybe I will get up the nerve to try tonight. I work wed, thurs, fri, and it sure would be nice to have some energy while at work. I wanted to go shopping earlier, and I didn't have the energy, so I took 1/2 of an Iodoral, and the whole time I was out I felt like I just had chemo. I find it fascinating to hear that a certain dosage can improve one's symptoms, or some of them anyway, but only a bit more iodine/iodine makes you feel like you have been put thru a meatgrinder or something. For me - I am taking Iosol drops, and 4 drops (as 2 X 2 daily) immediately dealt with chronic bowel problems that started with menopause 10 years ago. Several times, I decided to take 6 drops per day (3 X 2) and the next day I was wishing for death. Funny, huh. Or maybe not so funny! Guest guest
Yes, I take both armour and iodine. I have 98 temp instead of 96 so that means my stomach digests better and get more minerals and vitamins from my foods. Makes my blood tests work toward normal levels again. More energetic and the other hypo symptoms have lessened or gone. hope this helps. I take 4 grains a day of armour and 50 of iodoral. We are all different though. I take most of the supplements but body still doesn't like the ATP cofactors for some reason. Guest guest
Last night I decided to try going up to 50 mg of Iodoral. I am taking 1/2 tablet every 3 hours. That way if at any point it seems to be too much, I can just stop. So far every thing is okay. After the first 3 doses, my voice started to get hoarse as it does when my thyroid is being taxed. But I started to feel better overall. I am starting to get the facial neuralgia, so I'll drink some more salt water soon. One thing that is really hurting is a spot in my back on the left side on the lower part of my rib cage. I've had this pain before, but I don't know what causes it. I am thinking that I've been eating too many carbs since I started the iodine, as I became really hungry and lost my self control. It feels as though there's a knife in my back. I think that maybe I should stop eating for awhile, but that's hard to do when you have to go to work. I wake up a lot during the night to use the bathroom, and am usually freezing, but last night I wasn't so cold. This morning it was easier to get out of bed, too. I feel as though I have a little bit more ambition, too. Thank you, Gracia, for recommending going up to 50 mg.
