Hi Neurowurm,

The SCR you want to use is a much bigger one than the original one and

will require more gate current.The data sheet says maximum required is 150ma. If you are running on about 250v DC, the resistor will need to be about 1600 ohms. I would recommend starting with one slightly higher maybe 2200 ohms and see if it works OK.

A 5 watt resistor should be strong enough.
